I visited Kochi with a deep curiosity to understand more about cold-pressed coconut oil how it is made, how it benefits us, and why it is gaining so much attention today. I’ve always been interested in the manufacturing side of products, and when something is considered beneficial, I feel it’s important to explore it properly and share that knowledge with others.
During this Kochi visit, I, along with @Gurukrishnapriya ji @SarathUpendran @Manishhh @Rahul001 went to meet a local manufacturer/owner of Gramananma business, we had already spoken to earlier. The owner Mr. Thomas was kind enough to personally show us the entire process from raw material to the final product. It was a very insightful and authentic experience.
At the end of the session, we picked up a few bottles of cold-pressed coconut oil along with some local spices from their shop. I also shared my experience through a Google map review
and now I’m bringing it here for all of you.
What I Learned About Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil:
Cold-pressed coconut oil is extracted from dried coconut (copra), and there are two common methods used:
Expeller Pressing:
Copra is pressed using machines, which can generate more heat due to friction, especially when pressed multiple times. This may affect the oil’s natural aroma and some of its properties.
Rotary / Traditional Pressing:
This is a slower method where copra is grinded at controlled temperatures (around 30–35°C). Since less heat is generated, the oil retains more of its natural characteristics.
After extraction, the oil is stored in barrels for 2–3 days at room temperature to allow residues to settle naturally. It is then filtered and bottled without additional heating or preservatives.
Why It Matters:
This oil can be used for cooking, as well as for hair and skin care. It has been traditionally used in many parts of India, especially Kerala.
Also, a small but important distinction: virgin coconut oil is made from fresh coconut milk, whereas cold-pressed oil is made from dried coconut (copra).
Supporting Local Businesses:
What truly stood out for me was the dedication of small manufacturers who continue to follow traditional and mindful practices. Supporting such businesses means supporting authenticity, quality, and local communities.
Sometimes, understanding the story behind a product makes us value it even more.
