As introduced in my last City Graffiti series post, City Graffiti: Kaohsiung, the Largest Port City of Taiwan, the Pier2 Art Center is my second go-to spot in Kaohsiung, then which place is the first? That is Weiwuying Street Art Village. This place has been on my bucket list since I first saw it on a TV show. And voila, it didn’t just reach my expectation, it’s beyond!
What is Weiwuying Street Art Village?
In 2016, the first Wallriors Street Art Festival was held in Weiwuying to rejuvenate the old community. Over the past 4 years, more than 100 wall murals have been accumulated in this place. It’s now a new Kaohsiung landmark where foreign and local street artists gather to create artworks.
Where is Weiwuying Street Art Village?
It is located in Weiwuying (衛武營 in Mandarin), which is used to be a military area and now has been transformed into a cultural art hub of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, one of the largest performing arts centers in East Asia, is also in this area and is right next to the village.
Among al****l the mural pieces above, which one is your favorite?

@ChanneLing Wow… it’s a really wonderful post. It’s really interesting to be able to see street art and graffiti when visiting places. I think I am inspired to capture some of the street art near me also.
I really do need to come visit Taiwan after this pandemic and also eat all the delicious food there. Soon.

I love the library @ChanneLing but I don’t think these are graffiti they look like city sponsored murals. These happen around the world and are often called “The Big Picture Fest”. My own suburb does one annually and its in progress right now I’ll post pics when the artists finish later this week.

I just know, a mural is a painting applied directly to a wall usually in a public space. Usually buildings don’t get that much paint because of cost but seeing your pictures, well I would strongly recommend to do that to every cities. It was very relaxing, it’s like going back on my younger years. The colors indeed ignite memories of my past-- memories that can only be shared with few people. Doing this does not make things old. It gives me a good idea for my next project. Thank you.

Hi @Ewaade_3A ,
I was amazed by how amazing and large the murals are at the first sight too.
As for the pictures, they were taken by the mobile phone (Pixel 3). The quality may not be as high digit as those taken by cameras so I doubt it’d be sufficient to do so unless it’s for desktop wallpaper lol. And the copyright, I think it should be fine as long as it’s not for commercial use?

Hi @karinchavoll ,
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the article. The bookshelf cat mural is actually the first art piece I saw while exiting from the metro station. And it’s indeed an eye-wow piece!
Hi @PaulPavlinovich ,
Exact! I didn’t notice that before you pointed it out lol
. It’s a bit like the MURAL festival in Montreal, Canada, inviting artists from the world to create art projects and transform the city into an open-air gallery. Yet, the biggest difference here is that the event in Kaoshiung is more like city planning? Not as wild as the spirit MURAL holds.
Ohhhhh @PaulPavlinovich , and I updated the article title from City Graffiti to City Street Art lol.

Hi @Paragon ,
Thank you for the comment! I’m glad that you found joy in this article!
The concept of building murals did wow me too, as it’s harder to be drafted and painted than a usual mural or graffiti. Artists would have more things to consider, like the position of the windows, doors, also the scale of the building itself. It’s amazing to see the old community being renovated with these beautiful art pieces.
