Hello, dear friends,
Happy ‘Pride Month’ to all who celebrate it.
This post is in response to the joint initiative by our dear @Rahul001 and @AdrianLunsong.
Each year, the month of June comes alive with colours, stories, and celebrations as communities around the world observe Pride Month. For us, Local Guides, it’s also a time to explore, support, and amplify voices within the LGBTQ+ community by contributing meaningfully to Google Maps and Local Guides Connect.
To be frank with you, I have been having many doubts, and I have also been getting several questions regarding LGBTQ+ and Pride Month. Here is my humble try to explain this wast topic in brief, and easily understandable.
What is Pride Month?
Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Uprising of 28th June 1969 in New York City, a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Today, Pride is not only a celebration of identity and love but also a reminder of the journey toward equality, acceptance, and visibility.
Understanding LGBTQ+
The term LGBTQ+ is an inclusive acronym that stands for:
- L – Lesbian
- G – Gay
- B – Bisexual
- T – Transgender
- Q – Queer or Questioning
- ‘+’ – Represents other identities like intersex, asexual, pansexual, and more
Each identity within the LGBTQ+ spectrum has unique experiences and challenges, and recognising this diversity is the first step toward allyship and inclusion.
Here are a few more details for those who would love to know more about LGBTQ+.
How Local Guides Can Make a Difference
As contributors to Google Maps and Connect, we have the power to highlight and support inclusive spaces through:
- Reviewing LGBTQ±friendly businesses like cafes, bookstores, and safe spaces
- Adding accurate information, such as gender-neutral restroom availability or inclusive policies
Hope to explain more in another post in the future
