Happy Birthday Google Maps!!!

I remember in the early 2000s we all used Mapquest.com and we had to print the maps (directions) in order to drive or walk.

That seems so weird now when you think about it.

Also I remember when people bought gps devices for their cars or could rent them in car rentals less than 10 years ago. Now, you use your phone whether walking or driving.

Can’t wait what the next 15 years will bring Google Maps! Happy Birthday and many more!

Cheers,

Karen

First of all,

Happy Birthday Google Maps and congratulations to all of you guys.

now we are talking about life before google maps although I was born in 2002, so I don’t remember about life before 2002 or 2005.

but I know so much that before google maps life must have been difficult as compared to today.

today if we have to go somewhere, we open google maps first then measure the time and distance then choose the right way to go there.

and thank you google maps for creating this community and local guide program as we can get connected with the world level community.

Happy Birthday Google Maps!!!

I remember a long time ago when Google Maps had just released the ability to be able to see traffic along ones’ route.

That was absolutely groundbreaking for myself and my family, as we had to commute in and out of Los Angeles 2 to 4 hours a day one-way.

And knowing what traffic was like (or was going to be like eventually) made our lives so much easier and less stress!

I think this is one of the main things that turned me onto using the Google Maps app to begin with.

At one point in my life I had a GPS (Sat NAV), and I found it to be quite cranky and not very intuitive; very old-school and never updated! (Pay for updates!? No thank you!) But again Google Maps changed that in my life for offering alternative routes, better rerouting options, and up-to-minute updates along routes when traveling long-distances. (FOR FREE!)

And, lastly, long gone are those clunky days of needing to print out pages and pages of my directions in advance from Google maps n a computer,… when it went on as an app on my cell phone instead in real time.

All the little joys over the years to what it has become today. A match made in heaven

The only thing I remember about my life before Google Maps is when we used those huge paper maps when we used to go camping. Even though I miss those paper maps a lot, but it was never so convenient like the one on my computer screen, or even better now, on my cell phone screen. Ever since I have started traveling, Google Maps has always been there. Clearly, it’s been not so long since I am a traveler. But I can’t think of a life without Google Maps. It is part of my life now. And the best thing is, Maps doesn’t just show me direction, it gives me suggestions of nearby point of interests, events, happenings. And on top of everything, it even tells me when to get off the bus/ train, when to walk, which way to walk with visual direction and if I should check out some POI on my way. It works like an alarm to me when it’s time for me to go to work or go back home. The option of ‘commute’ has made life really easy for me. In short, Maps has become a dear friend to me now, especially when I am living alone in Texas, having very few friends.

Happy 15th, Google Maps! Keep beautifying my life with more information.

First and foremost my best wishes for google Map for successfully entering into 15th year and thanks to @TraciC and team for helping taking it forward with the help of Local guides. Happy to be part of this lovely LG family.

Before Google Maps (BG)

In Tamil there is a saying “The route to Madurai (city name) is through mouth”. That means in those days, if you wanted to go to a place you need just use your mouth (asking people) to get the direction. Also often people say ask to cop or cab drivers, because they know better. But often drivers will cheat, even for a walkable distance they would say its so far and complicated route. So that they can get a ride and paid by you. Also you don’t know where they are take you, they just round the places and increase the kilometer to get paid well.

In my childhood I have seen international tourist carrying printed maps and guide books and trying to figure out the location because they can’t trust the locals.

After google Map: (AG)

Earlier we say “God knows everything,” but now people say “Google knows everything or google is the answer”. Espeically Google Map has made map simple, user friendly and handy. I had map-phobia but even myself was fallen in love with Google map and turned as Google map contributor & map editor. so lovely.

Looking forward to give my best with quality contributions!!! Hope we can have a "Anniversary theme meetups around the world to celebrate this wonderful moment.

Thank you dear @izzyp223

I still remember the time when you needed a book with street maps. And then of course one way streets were changed in the opposite direction and you ended up on the other side of town.

Thank fully we have Google Maps for that now. And all the other goodies which are added.

Great stuff.
