Welcome back to Celebrate with Local Guides :sparkles:, where we highlight & celebrate meaningful causes and community awareness. September marks Colour Blindness Awareness Month :eye:, a dedicated time to understand how colour blindness affects an estimated 300 million people worldwide and how we as Local Guides, can make public spaces more accessible for everyone.

Most people experiencing colour vision differences do not see the world in black and white; instead, they have difficulty distinguishing between certain shades. Just as we advocate for Visually impaired individuals through tactile paving and screen-reader friendly details, considering colour perception is essential for true accessibility. From visually accessible cafes to accessible friendly restaurants, every detail we map helps ensure places are truly open and welcoming to all.

How Local Guides Can Contribute on Google Maps for Visual Accessibility? :eye:

We as local guides can contribute towards visual accessibility where our contribution can help those who have colour blindness.

  • Upload Clear, High-Contrast Media :selfie:t2:: When photographing storefronts, menu boards, transit maps & venue layouts, capture crisp, well-lit images so signage and text are legible regardless of colour clarity.

  • Write Descriptive Text in Reviews :writing_hand:t2:: Avoid relying solely on colour cues when giving directions or explaining amenities. Instead of writing "look for the green door next to the red banner”,mention shop names, landmarks, shapes, or clear position markers. Additionally, mention whether a venue is self-service or offers table service, as color-coded or low-contrast instructional signboards are often unhelpful or difficult to understand.

  • Edit Information :information_source:: Update places you visit about use of braille menu, table service or counter seating on Google Maps.
