Can the Top 100 System Help Find Hidden Contributions?

That’s interesting @tony_b. Did you try the @IzzyOz approach detailed in her How I discovered that I had hidden reviews & media post? Have you tried doing manual calculations to confirm the details in the Leaderboard System’s panel? Did you try any of the methods mentioned by other Local Guides for finding the hidden contributions? If you haven’t already done so, note the updated strict selection criteria for participation in the beta testing

(a) why you’d like to be involved in the beta testing,:
Since April 2024 I track the views of all my posted photos in a database, mark hidden photos or delete them, if I detect any. While this works fine for me for the photos, I am interested to see a method, which works for everybody (without having to maintain a database) and look for a method to find all (not only some) hidden reviews.

(b) what methods have you tried so far to find the hidden contributions
Scrolling My Contributions → Photos by date while being logged in and also in an anonymous session. before scrolling, I compare the number of public photos and the difference shows the number of hidden photos. Only if the number of hidden changed since the day before, I need to scroll down in the anonymous session.
I copy the underlying HTML and let a script written by myself compare both. Based on the information in my database, I can identify the hidden.
The same process works only partially for reviews, since I can never scroll down to see all reviews.

c) indicate what your current hidden numbers are.
I have currently 51 hidden and 7,634 published photos. All of the 51 became hidden because the pin changed to “unknown place”. For now, I decided, not to delete them, but I do know them all. Others which became hidden for unknown reasons, I either deleted immediately or succesfully appealed.
I have 4 hidden reviews out of 692 posted, but wasn’t able to identify them yet, as I explained above.

Yes @AdamGT, I had hers as well as other similar posts open and reading while I was doing this a few months ago. Hoping to try again tonight or tomorrow night to see if I get a different result.

Thanks @WilfriedB for following the selection criteria.

You said this works fine for me for the photos…what doesn’t it work for? The proposed method should work for everyone without needing to maintain a database.

I find it strange that your method only works partially for reviews yet you imply fully for photos.

Do the numbers you find match the numbers detected by the Leaderboard System? It ill be interesting to see if we can find the 4 hidden reviews.

See updated criteria as I’m also interested to know how long it takes you to go through the process.

Yes @tony_b it will be interesting to see if you do get a different result.

(a) why you’d like to be involved in the beta testing I’m a big admiterw of the T100 leaderboard since the past few months. It is like a monthly performance review for my contributions and helps me keep track of my achievements. As a beta tester, I would love to explore new features and provide feedback on it.
(b) what methods have you tried so far to find the hidden contributions and how long does it take you I usually use my laptop to open my Maps profile on a normal browser and simultaneously on an incognito mode as well. I have to manually go through each review and picture to find out which ones are hidden. It takes up a lot of my time. I spend close to 4 hours to go through my entire Maps contribution and make a list of the hidden contributions.
(c) indicate what your current hidden numbers are When I checked the last time, I had close to 60 hidden reviews and 40 hidden photos.

Thank you @AdamGT I have case my vote as well

As explained a bit later, while I can find all hidden photos, for the reviews, there are always some (4) I cannot find.

So far, I was not able to implement a version, which doesn’t use the database. The key point is to exactly get a link to the photo after having identified a missing thumbnail. You can display the thumbnail and the name of the place (which might be “Unknown Place” and therefore useless), but I could not get a link to a point, where I might be able to delete the photo or see details about the place, if it still exists.

And BTW, as of my knowledge, my approach doesn’t work on any mobile platform and for Apple, I simply don’t know anything

Me too! The problem is, when scrolling from newest (or last edited) to oldest, it stops long before reaching the oldest. From analyzing a takeout, I know, I have about 20% more reviews and ratings, compared to what My Contributions ever shows me. I am 99% sure, this not related to a lack of resources on my PC, but invite anybody to use the most powerful computer to check, how many of my public reviews can be shown.

However, having said this, I admit, the last check is a couple of months ago. I’ll check again soon.
Update: As of today, the takeout listed a total of 853 reviews & ratings and 189 updates by customer, whereas My Contributions stopped at[1] 546 reviews & ratings when logged in and 528 not being logged in.

This is another reason to participate with beta program: verify the numbers!

I forgot to mention the 3 hidden ratings, otherwise the numbers match:

Sorry, I missed that part last night
With a stable Internet connection as I have at home via DSL, it takes less than 10 minutes for scrolling to the end of photos by date (which I do daily for a different reason). Scrolling anonymously takes the same time, but I do so only if the difference of total number of published for anonymous versus logged in, did change since the day before.
Having scrolled and copied the HTML, the script runs for less than a minute.
So, provided I did record the numbers of hidden and public photos the day before, checking for a change takes less than a minute. Identify a newly hidden photo, can take up to half an hour.

  1. “Stopped” means, at the bottom of the display doesn’t disappear and you cannot scroll any further even if you wait for 15 minutes or longer ↩︎

New result - found all 7 hidden photos and deleted 6. The other one was part of a “Post a photo update” entry. I deleted the Caption and waiting to see if its status would change.

I found only 1 of the 4 hidden reviews, but didn’t delete it as it was text only, and I couldn’t see what could possibly be wrong. I note that it said “Edited 2 years ago”, so perhaps it became hidden at the time of the edit.

I didn’t record the time when I started, but my estimate based on memory and other activities, is that this took over 2 hours to complete.

Thanks for the opportunity @AdamGT.

Here goes

(a) why you’d like to be involved in the beta testing,

I am exactly the type of Local Guide that could benefit from tackling this difficult to resolve issue of hidden contribtions, especially in my case hidden media mainly photos, some reviews and ratings too. I believe I have always acted within the rules of Google Maps but was surprised to find so many of my photos are hidden. My recent experience is when I have picked up on my more recent hidden photos my appeals are normally successful. But the problem I have is that many older hidden photos are not that easy to find especially now that I have posted over 60,000 !

In addrrssing the problem I hope that the majority will be reinstated so for me it’s about rectifying something important to me and that justice is served. I will get the points I deserve too !

(b) what methods have you tried so far to find the hidden contributions and how long does it take you,

Recently thanks to the disccusions we have through this forum with the Top Guides I have started to pick up on some of my older hidden contributions, mainly photos. I have recently deleted some hidden photos and normal ones that don’t have many views and are not that important to me now.

I have had to scroll down on the Google Maps App on my smartphone to find them (looking out for Hidden symbol) using an App Flex Scroll recommended by a few fellow Guides like @WilfriedB. I will be doing regular culls from now using this method.

and (c) indicate what your current contribution and hidden numbers are

1,913 hidden media (current 61,664)
166 hidden reviews (current 3155)
7 hidden ratings (current 240).

Here I am again @AdamGT. Came home from work today with fresh determination and searched the reviews twice more by scrolling a regular and an incognito window side-by-side. I found a second hidden review out of the four. Then I remembered this post Which of my reviews are invisible? Google Docs provides a quick answer by @C_T and tried the document comparison method again. Got the same result I got 3 months ago in April this year. The document highlighted the same two reviews I found manually, and does NOT confirm the presence of the other two hidden reviews.

Hey @AdamGT I can definitely use an easier method to track my Hidden numbers,
I have 310 hidden media and I don’t know if that includes the approximately 200 or so photos "(Still uploading) " which were attached to reviews going back to 2019/2020.

Currently working on Hidden reviews . I currently have 90 hidden reviews out of 1768 reviews . I have found 14 in the last couple of months. I am using my tablet for this and scrolled all the way to my first review. I then check Incognito on my desktop to check to see my review. I do not use my tablet for anything else, I don’t want to lose my place and start scrolling from the beginning again.
I have found 14 hidden reviews so far out of 520 reviews so far and have checked over 25% of my reviews. It’s a daunting process but I check 10 sometimes 20 a night, so that it is not overwhelming.
Once reviews are done I will tackle media contributions.
So yes I would definitely like an improved method and yes I would have some time to Participate in Beta testing.

I am a passionate follower of the Top 100 system. That’s why I want to help test new things. I want to help check new features to make the system better. The new system will also help me fix my hidden contributions. And this will help everyone in the community too.

I’ve check my private contributions w.r.t what I see in incognito browser window.
I delete hidden contributions one by one. This takes a lot of time and work, so I can’t do it often.

Recently I have deleted many hidden media and reviews. I currently have 23 hidden photos or videos (media) and 95 hidden reviews. (These 95 hidden reviews are not visible to me, even in my private browser. I think the hidden reviews are taken down by the system)

Thank you everyone that expressed interest to participate in beta testing the new Leaderboard System features. To keep things manageable and allowing that say a couple will drop out once the participation requirements and scope of work have been released, 6 beta testers have initially been selected and we’ll start after the July Leaderboards are published. Thank you @AT_Rome and @LudwigGermany as I do appreciate that not everyone can dedicate time to be involved.

Dear @AdamGT,
This is a very demanding period for me professionally, and with long days away from home and personal responsibilities in the evening, I couldn’t commit as I would have liked.
I prefer to step in only when I’m sure I can follow through, and right now that’s not possible.
I’m confident the selected testers will provide excellent support.
Warm regards from Rome, Italy
@AT_Rome

Thank you for your message @AT_Rome and oh how I fully understand and appreciate your position but it’s all good, I think with the number interested in participating, we have enough resources to successfully test out and iron out any issues.
Wishing you all the very best.
