Barfi: a snack, a dessert-2 in 1

Barfies

Barfi is a popular food in South Asian countries. You can eat it as a snack in the afternoon or evening. Kids love them very much to eat. Elderly people also love them to eat. You may expect this sweet food at the end of any party or any special occasion. It is very soft, tasty, and delicious. It has a nice smell and found in various attractive shapes. Don’t be confused to see a movie poster in the name Barfi while you search in Google.

There are many ways to make Barfi. You can see some nice recipes here. My daughter loves to eat Barfi and she was chasing her mother for this for the last few days. So yesterday we made the Barfi in our kitchen in the simplest way which I will tell you here. We did not use anything special to make the Barfi even though, but they were very much tasty.

Ingredients:

  1. Dal – 1.5 cup (we used Chana Dal)
  2. Sugar – 2 cups
  3. Powder Milk – 1 cup (You can use liquid milk also)
  4. Salt
  5. Ghee/butter – 3-4 TBS
  6. Oil – 4-5 TBS
  7. Spices for a nice smell ( Cardamom and Cinnamon)
  8. Plastic molds to make the shapes (Not essential, the taste will be the same without them).

Process of Making:

Boil the dal very well. Then make dough with the boiled dal. Pour oil into the pan, then add ghee and the spices. Stir for sometimes. Then add the dal’ dough in the pan. Stir for several minutes to mix the oil and ghee nicely with the dough. Now add the sugar. Do not use all sugar together. You can divide the sugar and add them twice for better taste. After mixing the sugar well by stirring, add the milk powder, and keep stirring to mix everything properly. After sometimes the dough will become very soft and s nice smell will come out. The cooking part is done. Now use the molds to make shapes of the Barfi you want. If you don’t have the molds, you can spread the cooked dough on a tray and cut it into pieces like a pastry. Keep the Barfi inside the refrigerator for sometimes to get a better taste. Thanks.

I like Barfi so much. But we love to make it with Suji instead of Dal.

Thanks for your comments @Designer_Biswajit . It can be made with many things I think, depends on the person’s taste. I have also eaten Barfi made with the suji and they taste nice as well. But suji cannot be as soft as the Dal. Dal barfi will just disappear once you put into the mouth, so soft. Suji will stay for some time

@MukulR Wow !

This looks delicious :yum:

I loved the different shapes and design

Usually I have seen Barfi in diamond / square shape.

Have you used any molds or cutters to make the designs?

Wow…! @MukulR the barfi looks yummy.

Thanks for the photo, ingredients, recipe, and the helpful video.

I think the best part is where the molds separate without the barfi sticking to it and come out nicely.

Adding honey will definitely make it more tasty and healthy @HD7 . But, as I have not the previous experience of using honey I cannot tell the amount of it. If you use honey, you need to use less sugar I think. This is really a good idea and I must try. Thanks for your nice comments.
