Are You a Tourist or an Explorer? Let’s Celebrate World Tourism Day by Sharing Our Stories!

Hello, amazing Local Guides community! :waving_hand: Every year as World Tourism Day approaches, I find myself thinking deeply about how we experience the world around us. Have you ever paused to wonder what truly sets us apart as travelers? A tourist usually follows a rigid itinerary, checks off popular checklist landmarks, takes a quick photo, and moves on to the next crowded spot. But an explorer, that’s us! keeps a close eye on the smallest details that truly matter, noticing :wheelchair_symbol:accessibility features for everyone, checking out :p_button:car parking availability, tasting authentic local foods, and embracing the local culture even if it’s just for a few days, while above all looking at local traditions closely and with deep respect.

My Perspective Before Becoming a Local Guide

Before becoming a Local Guide, my perspective on travel was quite ordinary. Like most people, I traveled to enjoy beautiful monuments, appreciate nature and historical sites, and soak in the atmosphere of new places. Those were wonderful memories, but I used to look at the world around me on a much more surface level.

Back then, I had no real idea how challenging travel could be for others. I never really thought about how a :wheelchair_symbol:wheelchair user would manage a steep, ancient castle staircase, whether nature paths and trekking trails were truly accessible, or what hurdles visually impaired individuals face when trying to navigate an unfamiliar city. Like many healthy individuals, I took accessibility completely for granted. But the Local Guides program changed my outlook entirely, transforming how I view the world in ways I never imagined.

Uncovering the Heartbeat of Every Destination

Today, wherever I go, my eyes automatically scan spaces and places for accessibility and details. I pay attention to the little things I used to ignore: Are the footpaths and pathways smooth? Is there proper seating? Are accessible entries and wheelchair-friendly restrooms available? I don’t just think of wheelchair users; I keep visually impaired and low-vision visitors in mind, too. During visits to historical landmarks and palaces, my heart always lights up when I spot Braille signage. It brings me deep peace knowing a blind visitor can read the history of a cathedral or a fortress independently, without having to rely on others.

My journey always begins at the intersection of two worlds, the digital and the deeply human. First, I rely heavily on Google Maps and reviews from fellow Local Guides. I look at photos, read personal experiences, and search for places with a true soul, from tiny family-run restaurants and bakeries scented with tradition to historical landmarks.

At the same time, I deeply value personal advice from locals. For instance, whenever we rent a place during a vacation, I love chatting with the hosts. They always give the best recommendations, where to find the most delicious food, which sights are truly worth seeing, and what attractions are great for the whole family. Coupled with local brochures and pamphlets, direct human connection and trusted local advice are the most precious parts of experiencing a new culture.

Breaking Barriers: My Journey at Connect Live 2026

When you visit a foreign country and don’t speak the local language fluently, a fleeting moment of uncertainty can creep in: “How will I communicate?” But for me, that feeling quickly transforms into pure joy. Instead of fear or discomfort, I feel an incredible wave of energy and determination.

My most cherished and powerful experience was traveling to Connect Live 2026 in Dublin. When you visit a foreign country and don’t speak the language fluently, a fleeting whisper of doubt can creep in: “How will I communicate?” But for me, that tiny moment of hesitation always melts away into pure excitement.

Growing up in Slovakia means my heart and soul will forever speak Slovak, and life in Belgium has gifted me a comfortable grasp of Dutch. Yet, I choose to share my stories on Connect in English, our wonderful global bridge. But whenever I sit down to write, I always begin in my native tongue, letting Gemini help bridge the words. Why? Because the deepest emotions, the rawest memories, and the true heartbeat of what I feel can only be born in Slovak.

That deep truth hit me most when I learned I was heading to Connect Live 2026 in Dublin. When the news finally arrived, my heart literally soared with joy! I didn’t waste a single second worrying that my English wasn’t perfect. I already knew what I would soon discover firsthand, the Local Guides community is endlessly warm, open, and empathetic. Everyone treated my so-called “language barrier” as the most natural thing in the world, greeting me with glowing smiles and a genuine willingness to help. I just opened my heart, did my best, and the wave of acceptance I felt was nothing short of magical.

In Dublin, I realized I had crossed my own boundaries and limitations. That experience gave me immense courage and strength, motivating me so much that I happily enrolled in an online English course! I am incredibly proud of myself, knowing that if I will get the opportunity to attend any event again, I will be able to converse even better with friends from all over the world.

It taught me that passionate people don’t need perfect words to understand one another. We are connected by a shared passion, a smile, and a mutual mission to help others. You can communicate anywhere if you simply open your heart, leave your fears behind, and connect through what you love.

And happy World Tourism day to whole Local Guides community, making life easier for travelers around the World :globe_showing_europe_africa:

I personally prefer to explore new place l like a local, to meet people and experience diversity. I would rarely book cab, and try to explore on local transport.

Wonderful post, @Katarina_Cibikova !

It is so inspiring to read how your perspective on travel completely transformed after joining the Local Guides program, shifting from a surface-level tourist to a true explorer who cares deeply about accessibility, details, and local culture. Hearing about your unforgettable experience at Connect Live in Dublin, and how beautifully you overcame language barriers with your open heart and courage, is truly heartwarming. Your dedication to learning and growing is amazing.

Wishing you all the best in checking off those bucket list countries, especially Pakistan and India! And when you visit Pakistan, all of us Pakistan Local Guides will be ready and excited to welcome you.

Here are my answers :

1. Before joining the Local Guides program, what was your perspective on travel?

Before joining the Local Guides community, travel for me was mostly about visiting beautiful places, making memories with family and friends, and enjoying the scenic beauty or historical value of a destination. It was wonderful, but looking back, it was a very surface-level experience, just exploring the main highlights, taking photos, and moving on without paying attention to the smaller, meaningful details of the place.

2. How has your mindset shifted to become a true explorer rather than just a tourist?

The Local Guides program completely transformed my perspective. Now, rather than just acting like a tourist who checks off famous landmarks, my mindset is that of a true explorer. I find myself automatically noticing the little things that truly matter, such as :wheelchair_symbol:accessibility features for people with different abilities, proper parking availability, authentic local food spots, and the deep cultural roots of a community. Travel is no longer just about sightseeing for me; it is about documenting details accurately, helping others through Google Maps, and leaving a positive impact wherever I go.

3. When visiting a new city or country, how do you research its food, culture, history, and heritage?

My research for any new destination always happens through a mix of digital and human connection. First, I rely heavily on Google Maps, reading detailed reviews from fellow Local Guides, and exploring local stories. But even more importantly, I value direct human connection—talking to local friends, guides, or hosts when I travel. Whether it’s discovering authentic local barbecue, traditional street food, or hidden historical heritage sites, local recommendations and personal conversations give me the true soul of a destination.

4. How does it feel when you meet people from other countries who speak different languages?

Meeting people from different countries who speak entirely different languages is one of the most magical parts of traveling for me! Language barriers might exist in words, but when people share a genuine passion, like our shared mission in the Local Guides community, hearts connect instantly. Smiles, mutual respect, and a willingness to understand each other bridge any gap. In fact, some of my most cherished friendships and connections are with people across the globe who speak completely different native languages, proving that true connection goes far beyond words!

So far, I have had the privilege of visiting several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Mauritius (three times ), the UAE, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Kenya, and Singapore.

As for my dream destinations, India is right at the top of my list, which happens to be at the top of yours as well!
I am eagerly looking forward to meeting many dear friends there and exploring various cities together.
Second on my list are the European Union countries including yours and Italy, where I hope to finally meet friends I haven’t been able to see in person yet. Third is Mauritius all over again; no matter how many times I go, my heart never gets tired of it!
Mexico and Argentina are also very close to my heart, I really want to explore Mexico’s vibrant culture and delicious food while meeting wonderful friends there.
On top of that, I have a standing invitation from @KhanhDinh to Vietnam, so I would definitely love to add that to my bucket list too.
That pretty much sums up my travel dreams, and every single place on my list shares one common thing: it’s where my friends are.
My goal isn’t just to visit these countries, but to join amazing in-person meetups there as well!

Keep inspiring us with your incredible stories.

Here are my thoughts

For me, every place has a story worth discovering and sharing.

5000 Roads On Google Map

1. Before joining the Local Guides program, what was your perspective on travel?

My curiosity about lesser-known places started long before I became a Local Guide. Since my school days, whenever I visited a famous destination, I was more interested in finding places that few people knew about. I would ask locals, read newspapers, collect references, and share these discoveries within my circle.

2. How has your mindset shifted to become a true explorer rather than just a tourist?

Coming to the Local Guides Connect platform gave this passion a new direction. The TRAC campaign brought back my old interest in geography, maps and satellite imagery. I started using that interest to help Maps users, and have now created more than 5,000 Road with the same purpose. Today, family responsibilities limit the time I can give to travelling, but I still have a personal list of many lesser-known places across India that I want to visit and bring to the community.

3. When visiting a new city or country, how do you research its food, culture, history, and heritage?

I have always preferred learning through local people, historical references, newspapers, books, maps and on-ground observation. Even before Local Guides, I used to collect information and preserve references about lesser-known places so that I could verify what I discovered.

4. How does it feel when you meet people from other countries who speak different languages?

I have had the opportunity to visit Nepal, which is the only country I have travelled to outside India so far. Since it is close to my native place, I was able to travel there easily by motorcycle, and I never really faced a language barrier because Nepali people and people from my region have many cultural connections.

But honestly, India itself has taught me a lot about language diversity. I remember being in Kerala and regularly visiting a vegetable shop where the person serving me spoke neither Hindi nor English. We often communicated through signs or by writing things down.

Once, I went there to buy jackfruit. I first said “कटहल,” which he didn’t understand. Then I tried “jackfruit,” but that didn’t work either! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Finally, another shopkeeper told him that in Malayalam it is called “Chakka.” And that was my new Malayalam word for the day!

That experience made me realise that language differences can actually create some of the most memorable moments while travelling. My mother tongue is Hindi (&( Bhojpuri), and I naturally translate my thoughts into English when communicating with people here. I don’t feel any hesitation about that - because everyone is doing the same thing in their own way.

I have many such experiences, and perhaps I will share more of them when we meet at a Google event someday.

5. What countries have you visited so far, and what are the top 5 destinations on your travel bucket list?

I still have many places across India on my personal list, especially lesser-known ones. I also keep a list of places outside India. If I get an opportunity to travel outside India today, Lhasa in Tibet and Bhutan are currently at the top of my list.

Thanks for this wonderful post & tag. It brought back many memories. :folded_hands:

Happy World Tourism Day to Everyone

Very very happy to read your post @Katarina_Cibikova and thank you very much for tagging me.

Very true after becoming a Local Guide my way of approaching Maps has changed to a large extent. Apart from travelling in my own Country India I have travelled 11 countries.

1.Before joining the Local Guides program, what was your perspective on travel?

I have travelled a lot since my childhood. My dad has taken me to many places. He will not travel in hurry. He explores to the maximum. I have inherited that quality. Luckily my husband too loves travel. Before joining Local Guides program too I used take a lot of pictures with my little camera. I like to share my experiences with family and friends. I have bundles of photographs with me.

2.True my mindset shifted to exploring more and collect information about the place. Since now I can share my experiences and Knowledge to the whole world. Previously it was confined to a small number of people.

3.My research about a new place starts by interaction with the Local perple and communities. Also I spend more time in heritage places and Museums. Now I research through Google and with the help of Google Maps my travels has increased. I have written Stories in my reviews in Google Maps.

4.I love very much to talk to people. Yes talking to people with sign languages and actions is very very interesting. My country has many languages travelling to the next state itself requires more efforts. I am from deep south and have continuously travelled to places of unknown languages. Throughout the world people are very friendly.

5.My first travel outside India was NEPAL followed by Dubai, Oman, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Singapore and Malaysia.

Countries in my bucket list are all Asian Countries Srilanka, Cambodia, Indonesia, China, Pakisthan, Japan.

:joy:

hi @Katarina_Cibikova , here are my responses -

before joining the local guides program, what was your perspective on travel?

have always enjoyed travel for as long as i can remember. all of the tools and services available today, including google maps and local guides, have simply enhanced the and provided a different experience. for example, it is a lot easier today to do research and figure out what might be best to do in the limited time available.

how has your mindset shifted to become a true explorer rather than just a tourist?

i have never really been a tourist in the sense of doing what the masses do. have always been interested in seeing places as the locals see, experiencing as the locals do. looking for things that truly represent a place.

when visiting a new city or country, how do you research its food, culture, history, and heritage?

start with internet search and reading lots. then ask locals.

how does it feel when you meet people from other countries who speak different languages?

normal. it is a fact of life we are all different, communicating differently, and speaking different languages. the translation tools and services available today are simply liberating, making it so much easier to communicate. in some ways, it is unfortunate, because there is now less motivation to learn other languages. nevertheless, i will one day learn other languages, as it has always been a wish of mine to do so.

what countries have you visited so far, and what are the top 5 destinations on your travel bucket list?

i have not actually made an effort to log and note, unfortunately. probably more than i can count on both hands. they include singapore, malaysia, australia, thailand, indonesia, india, japan, usa, canada, mexico, uk, ireland, france, germany, denmark, netherlands, belgium, and perhaps a few others i am having some trouble remembering now. :slightly_smiling_face: in addition to others i have not been to, all of those i have already been to need re-visiting, as i certainly have not done everything in each that i would like to.

would like to see much more of europe, korea and other asian places, perhaps some africa and latin america. and new zealand. the arctic and antarctica. probably won’t get to all before my time is up!

  • Before joining the Local Guides program, what was your perspective on travel? I used to explore as a tourist, capturing the popular spots and following the herd where the crowd used to go.

Now, I started exploring as a Local Guide, focusing more on observing the accessibility features, sustainable practices adopted, checking Google Maps to see if any corrections are required. Dear @Katarina_Cibikova,

Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful and heartfelt post. :heart_suit: And a belated Happy World Tourism Day to you too. Your journey from a casual traveler to a true explorer, discovering accessibility, hidden details, and the stories behind places, is truly inspiring.

Your experience at Connect Live 2026 in Dublin and how you overcame the language barrier really touched me.

It is so true that when we open our hearts, the Local Guides community welcomes us with warmth.

Sometimes, a simple smile can speak more than words ever could.

I would love to share my own experiences with you, especially because I was so happy to see four of my favorite destinations on your bucket list; apart from my home country, India :india:, and the two countries I am yet to visit, Pakistan :pakistan: and Mexico :mexico:: the USA :united_states:, Indonesia :indonesia:, Singapore :singapore:, and Mauritius :mauritius:.

Finding the Heart of the USA and Indonesia

During my travels in the USA, I realized that while the famous monuments and national parks are breathtaking, the real beauty often lies in the simple moments; talking with locals, exploring small towns and experiencing the wonderful diversity of everyday communities.

In Indonesia, going beyond the usual tourist places gave me an entirely different perspective. The warmth of the people, lesser-known temples, local markets, and delicious street food helped me connect with the culture in a much deeper way. Even without sharing the same language, smiles and simple gestures were enough to create beautiful connections.

Discovering Accessibility in Singapore and Connection in Mauritius

Exploring the local hawker centres gave me a wonderful glimpse into the city’s everyday culture and heritage. And, of course, I loved noticing the little things as usual; the tactile paving, wheelchair-friendly :wheelchair_symbol: access, accessible MRT, and thoughtful city design.

And then there is Mauritius. :heart_suit: Stepping beyond the usual tourist resorts and exploring local markets made my experience truly special. Even though my French or Mauritian Creole wasn’t perfect, I experienced the same beautiful connection you described in Dublin. We communicated through smiles, laughter, gestures, and a shared love for food and travel. It reminded me that we don’t just visit places; we connect with their people and their soul.

It makes me so happy to see these four wonderful destinations on your bucket list. I am sure that when you visit them, you will discover countless beautiful details, create unforgettable memories, and find your own special stories to share with the community.

Thank you for reminding us what it truly means to be a Local Guide and a curious explorer. Keep exploring, keep mapping, keep sharing, and most importantly, keep inspiring others through your journey.
