Last year I visited the city of Phoenix in the state of Arizona which is in the western part of the US. This visit was for attending a conference. It was the month of May and the temperature was soaring around 40°C. I went outside the Phoenix Convention Center for a walk after lunch in the afternoon. A couple of blocks away I was passing in front of the Arizona Science Center where a tall cactus caught my attention.
Prior to this, I had seen cactus only in a garden pot that was meant mainly for decoration. Those cactuses were hardly 6 to 18 inches in height.
But here I was standing in front of a cactus that was at least 8 feet tall. I kept admiring it in awe and also took a closer look. Later I learned that such cactus is common in the state of Arizona due to the dry and arid climate.

Compelling story.
However, while being at Phoenix, you must have visited the Grand Canyon. On the way, you would have seen still taller cacti. Did you capture those?
In an unfortunate and funny incident I missed the bus that was supposed to take me to the grand canon since my phone was on silent and the driver called me several times which I could not respond to.
Not only I lost the USD 70 for the trip, but also the opportunity to visit the grand canyon and see more cactus
I had the same experience with you. I saw a big cactuses for the first time in Los Angeles.
Exactly the same with you that before I’ve only seen cactus in a gardenpot for decoration. So, this kind of experience was so unique for me. When I was in LA, I’ve even texted my friend who is studying agriculture. I told him that “THE BIG CACTUS IS REAL!”
I can see that sighting a big cactus was an equally exciting experience for you too.
Though I observe that you witnessed naturally growing cactus on the roadside whereas the one that I saw was planted in the science center. Nevertheless, they were huge.
Also, I am aware of cactus as food and have seen people cooking yummy dishes out of cactus.
I never had an opportunity to see and get close to tall cactus in the wild, which would be quite exciting, I believe.
I have seen people eating the pulp of the cactus without cooking it and it seems to be quite tasty and delicious from their expressions.
Some cactus bear flowers that are unique and very beautiful. I am going to explore those during my next trip to the deserts of California or Nevada.
Were you able to see any flower-bearing cactus during your travel in LA?
@TusharSuradkar The hot-humid weather of Phoenix city is very much similar to my location (Khobar city). I remember during one of my research study which was related to studying the energy performance of office buildings located in hot weather, I was doing the simulations but didn’t find the weather data file of my local city, later on upon literature review I found that the weather conditions of Phoenix city perfectly matches Khobar.
In fact, why go so far across continents? If you happen to travel towards Aurangabad from Hyderabad, the climate in summer is typically warm and dry, which is similar to Arizona or KSA, except that the largest river in India, Godavari flows along and the soil is rich alluvial. What do you think?

I’ve only seen this wild cactus once when I was going down to downtown LA from the Hollywood Sign, so that I didn’t see any flower-bearing cactus. That must be beautiful!
