When I think about the most interesting thing I have done as a Local Guide ? … one come to my mind:ACCESSIBILITY
I started to make contributions on Google Maps in August 2016 and I noticed that the information about how accessible a place is, is very important. This idea was reafirmed by the post done by Traci about How Local Guides can help millions in September (2017)She invited us to improve Maps addingwheelchair Information . I thought it was extremly interesting and joined with this meet-up[RECAP] Accessibility / Accesibilidad Muelle Carabelas.
In that meet-up I started to use this guide "How to Answer Wheelchair Accessibility Questions" made by the Local Guides Team and I realized that it´s VEEERY EASY to take these important aspects in consideration when we review or upload photos of ANY PLACE. This moment was crucial, and after and before as a Local Guide. Here is the video ? we made following the guide mentioned above:
Now a days, I ALWAYS TRY to mention aspects related to accessibility on my posts on CONNECT and my contributions on GOOGLE MAPS ? , and the Local Guides Team Surprised me with their recognition in these articles (thanks ?) :
- Meet Accessibility Champion, Alejandra (LocalGuidesConnect)
- Four accessibility champions making a difference on Google Maps (LocalGuidesConnect)
- Meet @AlejandraMariaBarcena, Local Guide Level 9
(Instragram)
Since I joined the Local Guides Programs my friends and family ???? supported me and they become LGs too ??. In our Meet-Ups and in our daily life we talk about this topic and we are increasingly aware of its importance. For us accessibility is a broad term that includes people with reduced: mobility , vision ?, communication ?, audición ??, intelligence ? …
I really love and enjoy when they send me photos ? or we talk about some I took ( BTW: they encourage me use them in Maps and Connect) for example:
1) Lina (she is a LG and makes contributions on Google Maps and has attended to several meet-ups) shared with me these photos of the III Fair of the Tapa of Huelva (October, 2019).
She was incredible happy because there were simple drawings (pictograms) accompanied by simple explanations that could be understood by people with autism or with an low IQ or even kids!
For example in the next collage focus on the photo down-center, you can read :
Precio (price): a drawing of the coins ? ( that can be used to pay because they add up to 2.50 euros), a drawing of a plate ? with some squares
and the smaller one in red, that shows that the price of the tapa is cheap.
2) Berta (she is LG and joined Connectlast summer, I am trying that she becames more active here ?)
Last Christmas she was on vacation in Pamplona and was totally surprised when she saw a traffic light ? with pictograms. They are used for people with autism but as you can imagine, many people like kids can benefict of them. Inmediatly she texted in our whatsapp group and shared with me and with ALL my co-workers.
3) I found this crosswalk in Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
We are not sure if its goal is to make it easier for people with vision difficulties to cross the street, but we (my friends and I) think it is perfect for them and children ?, and the elderly …
And one of the last things that happened to me was last month: I was in a conference . Once finished, one of my bosses came to me and told me "you were incredible focus, taking notes ?… You weren´t here, you were thinking how to transfer this information to your Google Maps World ? "
He was totally right ?. I was learning new accessible aspects… one of them … Hearing Induction Loop that generates and electromagnetic field that can be connected to cochlear implants, hearing aids … and eliminates noise from the environment emphasizing the main broadcast (for example in a theater ?, the dialogues are clearly listened and the noise from the seats ? is eliminated)
Now I am looking for places with this magnetic equipment and upload this information to Google Maps. I thought I haven’t seen any yet… But I was totally wrong !!! I didn´t notice because I wasn´t looking for them, but yes… I have done contributions with Hearing Induction Loop places . For example I found a contribution I made in Nov 2017 in the parking of Seville´s airport (when a place have a Hearing Induction Loop the icon is blue with an ear ?, an oblique line and a T )
To SUMMARIZE: Non-adapted environments facilitate disability, adapted environments eliminate (or soften) disabilities (are more inclusive). That´s why I think these contributions are important.
In fact, I don’t like to talk about disability, I prefer to say people with DIFFERENT FUNCTIONAL CAPACITIES. (I prefer to eliminate the latin prefix dis- )
As you can imagine, this is the post I am using for applying to CL20, here is the Vídeo and the list, Seville by Carriage.
Greetings from the South of Spain ??,
Alejandra ??.
