A Story of Five People from Cambodia Who Hold Our Community Together

Cambodia Community Spotlight 2025

#10YearsOfLocalGuides #CommunitySpotlight2025 #CambodiaLocalGuides

@Sophia_Cambodia · @mosesngeth · @ViasnaPhon · @Meta · @JVanSd

Today I want to recognize the people who truly drive our community forward — not for fame, not for rewards, but because they care about Cambodia, about digital accuracy, and about building something meaningful together.

A community is not built by one person.
It is built by people who show up with heart.
And these five are exactly that.

@Sophia_Cambodia – The Silent Backbone Who Connected Cambodia to Google

If there is one person who always stands behind me, behind the team, and behind every activity — it’s Tieng Sophea.

She is quiet, calm, and humble, but her impact is huge.

Sophea supports every project:
checking data, joining marathons, verifying information, guiding new members, and helping whenever something needs to be fixed. But one moment truly showed her importance to the community:

She joined the official virtual meeting with our team and helped connect the Cambodian Local Guides directly to Google.

That was not a small thing.
For the first time, Cambodia had a real voice in front of the Google team — presenting our concerns, our reports, and our issues clearly.

Sophea took part in that discussion, representing our community with confidence and honesty.
Her presence helped show Google that we are serious, organized, and united.
It strengthened our voice and helped Google understand the real situation in Cambodia.

This is what makes Sophea special:

  • She doesn’t talk much, but she speaks at the right moments.
  • She doesn’t seek credit, but her contribution is big.
  • She doesn’t stand in the spotlight, but she holds the foundation.

Sophea is the kind of leader who leads by action, not words.

@mosesngeth– The Guardian of Truth & Digital Sovereignty

Moses is the one who took our efforts to another level — through real research, data analysis, and strong documentation.
He worked day and night to help build the Google Maps Violations Investigation Report.

He brought evidence.
He brought structure.
He brought the courage to speak up.

Because of Moses, Cambodia’s digital map is now watched, protected, and supported by real data — something we never had before.

He is the person who shows that community work can become national impact.

@ViasnaPhon – The Energy of Every Activity

Whether it’s a meetup, marathon, or mapping trip — Viasna brings the energy.
He helps with logistics, photos, coordination, ideas, and keeps the whole team moving.

He makes the environment positive.
He makes activities smoother.
He makes people feel welcome.

His creativity and consistency are part of why our community events feel alive and meaningful.

@Meta – The Technical Engine Who Supports API, Apps, and Night Work

Meta is one of the strongest supporters in our technical side.

While many people help during the day, Meta is the one who still helps in the evening — fixing issues, testing tools, supporting our API system, and helping with app development or technical checks when the rest of us are tired.

He is the person we call when something breaks.
He is the one who helps test every new idea.
He is the technical support for the team — always there, always ready.

Meta doesn’t just join activities —
he helps build the technical backbone of our community tools, APIs, and app integrations.
And he does it quietly, without expecting credit.

His support every night keeps our work moving.
His technical skills make our projects stronger.
His attitude makes the team feel supported.

:star: Davan – The Logistics, The Solutions Maker, The Heart of the Community

If there is someone who stands for true community spirit, it is Davan.

She supports us every evening, especially when things get busy.
She helps check logistics, confirms locations, finds the right meetup places, and makes sure everything is safe and suitable for the team.

Davan is the person who ensures we have the right location, the right setup, and the right support for every meetup.

She doesn’t just join — he solves problems.
She finds solutions, checks the area, talks to people, and makes sure our team has everything we need.

Her energy is warm.
Her support is consistent.
Her heart is always open.

Davan represents the real spirit of the community —
helping not because he has to, but because he cares.

Why These Five Are Heroes

All five — Sophea, Moses, Viasna, Meta, and Davan — share the same qualities:

  • They support in silence.
  • They work day and evening.
  • They believe in what we are building.
  • They help make sure every meetup is safe and successful.
  • They care about Cambodia, the community, and the purpose.

They are not just Local Guides.
They are the ones who make our community real.

Thank You, Heroes

To Tieng Sophea,
Moses,
Viasna,
Meta,
and Davan

Thank you for your time.
Thank you for your heart.
Thank you for carrying this community forward.

You are the reason we are strong.
You are the reason we are united.
You are the heroes of our community.

Thank you so much @SholaIB for your kind words and for recognizing our team effort.
It truly means a lot to us here in Cambodia.

Some of our members may not be very active on Local Guides Connect or even on Maps, but they always show up in person — helping with logistics, planning, community meetups, and giving support behind the scenes. Their support in real life helps me and the whole team so much, and it’s a big part of why our community keeps moving forward.

We are learning and growing together, and your encouragement really motivates us to continue building a strong, positive Local Guides community.

It means a lot to me and to the team as a whole with your kind words and recognition @SholaIB @SophatCHY I cannot do it alone without you and the team effort. I also recognize you as one of the leaders in this matter. @SholaIB I have a lot of questions in regards to road mapping. We need a lot of updates from Cambodia but just don’t know how to start it. @SophatCHY Above your tight schedule whether a personal or work, you still manage to cover everything. Beautiful piece of writing and energy. Thank you for that!

Blessed that they came up with a beautiful heart, spending their own time and effort just to contribute to the community. I believe it will going to be bigger and more recognized. Looking forward to seeing the community go stronger and brighter.

Congratulations to the Cambodia team. It looks like I have been re-inspired to visit Cambodia again! As a teenager, I got to know about Cambodia on CNN. The tourism adverts which used to be a few minutes made me admire this country. It’s encouraging to read about the resilient LGs to keep your community visible on Maps and on Connect. I know @ChamnanMuon is a veteran who has paid his dues and inspired many. @Sophia_Cambodia who has kept the spirit. Thank you for shining the light on your volunteers and country making our global community fun and helpful.

Thank you very much @EmekaUlor the spotlight somehow brings out the unity among us again. It means a lot for the whole community. We often work quietly and by our own, especially contributing to Google maps. But this holds us together. I hope the spirit keeps going.

Thank you bro :folded_hands: @EmekaUlor. Hope to meet you again in person here, in Cambodia, or other places :folded_hands:
