A Latte Love in Silence: World Coffee Day with a Purpose ☕🤍

Happy World Coffee Day, Local Guides! :hot_beverage::sparkles:

Whether coffee fuels your 10,000-step mapping walks or is the bribe you need to write reviews, we can all agree it keeps our community running.

Being in Indonesia, we’re practically caffeinated by default.

Quick Fun Fact: Indonesia is the world’s 4th-largest coffee producer (Int’l Coffee Organization)

More Than Just a Caffeine Kick :love_you_gesture::white_heart:

Good beans are great, but the soul of a café is what turns a pin into a memory.

Recently, I stopped by Sunyi Coffee Barito. What makes this spot special is that the talented baristas and team are Deaf and hard-of-hearing friends. Instead of shouting over a noisy espresso machine, you order using basic sign language (BISINDO), with handy illustrated charts at the counter to help.

My latte arrived with lovely latte art, perched on a paper napkin printed with the finger-spelling alphabet and this quiet gem of a reminder:

“Hey, terima kasih sudah dukung perjuangan kami. Kamu juga terus berjuang ya, jangan nyerah :)”

(Hey, thank you for supporting our fight. Keep fighting your battles too, don’t give up!)

In the middle of a frantic city, that little note hits harder than a double espresso.

We talk a lot on Connect about mapping physical accessibility like ramps and tactile paving. But highlighting socially inclusive spaces that champion disability empowerment and barrier-free communication is just as vital. It’s what gives Google Maps its human touch.

Sunyi Coffee is truly unique, one of Indonesia’s pioneering inclusive cafés that employs and empowers Deaf baristas. Over the years, I have visited every single branch and hosted in-person meet-ups there. @indahnuria While a few locations have unfortunately closed their doors along the way, :smiling_face_with_tear: that journey deserves a spotlight of its own. I’ll be sharing the full story soon here on Connect; stay tuned! :raising_hands:

Over to you:

What’s filling your cup today? And do you have an inclusive local gem in your city that deserves a spotlight on Maps? Drop your brew and photos below! :hot_beverage::backhand_index_pointing_down:
