After a call from Googler @Latika_Malhotra, a fascinating trend emerged in April 2026—what can be described as the “Stadium Effect.” A sudden surge of highly coordinated, non-traditional mapping guides was observed around IPL cricket stadiums such as Wankhede, Eden Gardens, Chinnaswamy, and Arun Jaitley.

While Local Guides have always focused on mapping static places like permanent shops and landmarks, this phase highlighted a shift toward mapping dynamic human experiences. Through creative lists on Google Maps and storytelling on Connect, Guides captured real-time insights such as crowd navigation, food options during match hours, and smart movement strategies.

A quick search for “IPL” on Connect alone revealed nearly 50 related posts, reflecting the scale and enthusiasm of this trend.

This marks a powerful evolution: Local Guides are no longer just mapping locations—they are building real-time, crowdsourced survival guides for cultural moments. It shows how maps are transforming from simple geographic directories into living, emotional navigation tools, shaped by shared community experiences.

Although the number of first-time authors is heartening to see @SharmaK ji, my focus would be on how many are retained and encouraged to continue.

If you could do this on a monthly basis, the trend over the next 6 months will tell a lot about the LG platform.

I know you are already putting a humongous effort into welcoming and tabulating the work and contribution of new and old local guides, a trend that shows retention is also a strong indicator of how well a global platform like LGC is performing.

I am doing my bit by engaging and retaining new local guides by involving them in the Maps Master meetups + your continuous engagements via the series of quizzes…

What else do you think we can do to retain new local guides and keep their interest kindled.
