A Gem in the Heart of Lisbon: Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques. Portugal!

Dear fellow local guides, I hope you’re all doing great.

This park is closer to my neighborhood, and having lived here for more than six years, it has truly become a part of my daily rhythm. I passed by this afternoon, and the way the light hit the trees reminded me just how special this spot is, so I wanted to share it with you all.

Alameda is the vibrant heart of the Areeiro neighborhood. Spanning a grand axis between the Fonte Luminosa and the Instituto Superior Técnico (Public university), it offers a perfect blend of historic architecture and urban leisure.

  • Why You Should Visit: :thought_balloon:

The Fonte Luminosa: This is the crown jewel of the park. Designed in the 1940s, it is a grand, Art Deco-style fountain that creates a perfect backdrop for photos. It’s particularly beautiful during the golden hour when the light hits the stonework.

The Vibe: It is a wonderful mix of students from the nearby university, families from the neighborhood, and people simply enjoying the Lisbon sun. It’s never too chaotic, yet always feels alive.

Accessibility: It’s incredibly easy to reach. Whether you are walking through the surrounding residential streets or taking the Metro (Alameda station), it’s a perfect spot to break up your day.

Seasonal Delights: Throughout the year, the park transforms with the seasons. From local fairs and events to the simple joy of watching the jacarandas bloom, it’s a place that changes enough to stay interesting, but stays familiar enough to feel like home.

If you are ever in the neighborhood, I highly recommend grabbing a coffee, finding a bench, and taking in the view. I also recommend dropping by in the morning, when the air is crisp, or in the late afternoon, when the golden hour light makes everything look vibrant and inviting.

On May 31, 2026, evening, I captured the above two photos while watching the sunset from above the fountain area. One of the best parts about watching the sunset from here is how close the Lisbon Airport is; it’s a beautiful sight to see the planes slowing down and descending for landing as the sun sets in the background.

Seeing the glimpses of Lisbon through your lens is a delight, dear @Roman_Ahmmed

After looking at these photos, I desire to travel to Lisbon.
It remains my dream.

Do people in Spain and Portugal understand English easily?
That is my greatest fear.

Thank you so much for the kind words, @TusharSuradkar, dada!

Lisbon is such a vibrant and welcoming city. I hope you get to experience it for yourself one day!

About the language barrier, while Portuguese is the official language, you will find that English is widely understood in Portugal, especially in cities, tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants. Most people working in the service industry speak it very well, and locals are generally very patient and happy to help tourists.

I have visited Madrid and Barcelona, and I found that local people understand basic English in addition to their native language. Thank you.
