Hi all, am sharing an interesting tidbit.;)
The red ball on the tower called the
Time ball had a special significance in the olden days and the navigators used it as a time reference to set their time before sailing out. The ball was raised a little before 1pm everyday to intimate the sailors and dropped exactly at 1pm for them to set the clock. And this is how the term 'on the ball' came into use!;) That's the tidbit;)
Till date, the ball dropping event takes place everyday, but more as a tourist attraction here at Greenwich Royal Observatory.
The Prime Meridian 0°0°0° passes through here and home to Greenwich Mean time(GMT)
Cheers!
