GUM ("Main universal store") occupies the entire block of the Kitai-Gorod and is facing Red Square. Prior to the 1921, the location was known as the Upper Trading Row.
Construction of the Upper Trading Row began in 1890. The opening ceremony took place on December 2, 1893.
The building consists of 16 blocks, connected by three longitudinal and three transverse galleries, above which there huge arched skylights of iron and glass. The glass-roofed design made the building unique at the time of construction.
