Franco Pirelli's "Monument to Multiculturalism", is located right in front of Toronto's Union Station - on Front Street. It was placed here "temporarily" in 1985, and only removed a few years later for cleaning pigeon droppings off the top of it. It was a gift from Toronto's Italian community to celebrate the city's 150th year (in 1984) of being called Toronto, and initially the city didn't want it - on the basis that its design didn't suit the aesthetics of the 1921 Beaux-Arts designed railway station. Toronto is described as the world's most diverse city, and with more than 300,000 people passing through Union Station every weekday, it can be assumed that a great deal of eyeballs may gaze up at this sculpture. This is not the only "Monument to Multiculturalism" by Pirelli in the world - with other sites including Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Nereto (Italy), Changchun (China), San Pedro (USA), and East London (South Africa).
