The good news is that the count is back. The bad news is that it is current frozen from some time last week.
Just received an email from Google giving the real total counts. Bottom line is that they are having some problems (which has been seen before this) and they will eventually get it right. Until then, we have to patient with the counts and trust that it is not losing anything. Past evidence shows that nothing is lost.
