Nestled in the heart of Dhanmondi, Yum Cha District stands out as a go-to spot for excellent dim sum and Cantonese cuisine in Dhaka. As soon as you enter, the vibrant interiors with Chinese lanterns and bamboo décor transports you to the culinary streets of China.
I visited their Dhanmondi outlet on a busy Saturday afternoon and had to wait around 45 minutes to get a table. The waiting area can get crammed during peak hours, so reservations are highly recommended. Once seated, the efficient servers quickly took our order and within minutes, our table was laden with steaming bamboo baskets loaded with delectable dim sum.
We started off with the signature siu mai, juicy prawn and pork dumplings with a burst of flavors in every bite. The crispy fried wontons with a sweet and sour sauce perfectly balanced the crunch and tanginess. Of the rice dishes, the seafood fried rice topped with prawns and squid was outstanding. The wok hei was sublime and the rice delicately flavored without overpowering the fresh seafood. Also ordered the Wild Berries and peach drink which I loved. The wild berries tasted fresh and sweet with a nice tangy finish.
For mains, the sweet and sour chicken had a nice tempura-style crispy batter coating the juicy chicken inside. The kung pao chicken was a letdown though, with the meat being too tough and dry.
Overall, Yum Cha District excels in delivering some of the most authentic and scrumptious dim sum in Dhaka. They have an extensive menu featuring both popular and innovative dim sum preparations along with aromatic Chinese teas. Go with a group of friends and order liberally from across the menu to experience the best of what they have to offer. Just be prepared to wait a bit during peak hours for a table.
