You Can Help Feed the Homeless with Google Maps

Hey Local Guides,

Thank you so much for the positive feedback on my recent Google Maps list of Winter Program Homeless Shelters in Los Angeles, California. There are nearly 1,000 people experiencing homelessness in my city, so this is a cause that is near to my heart. I’ve recently learned that 100 of these people are under the age of 18, which is why I’ve created another Google Maps List called Youth Resources in Santa Monica with information for our youngest neighbors.

To put it simply, I’m now focused on leveraging Google Maps Lists to help address our city’s challenges in a practical and meaningful way. I’m taking existing city resources and migrating the data into Google Maps Lists, so that people experiencing homelessness can find them more easily.

I’m working on creating a second Google Maps list called LA Restaurants with EBT Eligibility that shows all of the restaurants in Los Angeles that accept The CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program (EBT), which allows homeless, disabled, and elderly (age 60 and over) individuals and his/her spouse (husband, wife, common-law husband, common-law wife) receiving CalFresh benefits to use their Golden State Advantage (EBT) cards to purchase meals from participating restaurants. It pains me to know that millions of people around the world go to bed hungry every nights, so I am doing my best to at least help a few people get connected to a hot meal here in Los Angeles.

Unfortunately I’m only able to add 230 places to the LA Restaurants with EBT Eligibility list, however, I have 16 more pages of restaurant data to add to the map. Does anyone have any advice on creating large lists like this?

Lastly, if homelessness and hunger are challenges in your corner of the world, I strongly encourage you to get to know someone in your community who is struggling and see if a Google Maps list like these would help. Many cities have food stamp programs, so hopefully y’all can use this format in your own city. With Google Maps lists making this information more accessible, more people can have hot meals.

This is soooooo great initiative, @AshleySundquist .

Must be very helpfull for the community.

In my opinion, if you want to add larger number of POIs in your list but you cannot do that because it has reach its maximum, maybe you could make it list from smaller district/area? Maybe list of EBT Restaurants in Block A-B-C or something.

Thank you @iorikun301 that’s a really good point. I’ll see if I can break down the areas a little better. It’s just SUCH an overwhelming document with restaurants all over the city! http://file.lacounty.gov/SDSInter/dpss/1044385_Listing_of_Participating_Restaurants_by_Zip_Codes.pdf
