Yenya also known as Indra jatra is the biggest street religious festival during September-October happening in Kathmandu.
Hello @RaunakMaskay ,
Thank you for introducing this festival to us! These masks are incredible and I can imagine how impressive are the dances with them. Can you tell us something more about the celebration?
Are these photos from the last year’s event? Is there a Yenya festival this year? Did you attend it?
Today September 17 2019 was the last day of 8 days festival.
According to legend Lord Indra the King of Heaven came to pick some flowers named Blue Mimosa (Parijat) for some rituals send by his mother. During that incident the owner of the garden caught him and tied him up for stealing. Later everyone came to know that the thief was Lord of Heaven. Every year to mark this event the Idol of Indra is tied up and different deities in masks come to see the tied Indra.
Thanks for the explanation @RaunakMaskay ! This is a really interesting legend that gave birth to such a beautiful tradition.
