Writing a series of connected posts as a case study to share ideas

Local Guides Case Studies

“Perspective is everything”

I am intending to write several series of connected posts based on, case studies relating to my own experiences in creating content for Google Maps and Google Street View.

One of the problems with writing items to post on the Google Local Guides forums is that they have little or no ability to create joined up content or build a consistent audience. An example of this self-limitation is the requirement to only list one idea at a time when you want to bring new ideas for the ‘Ideas Exchange’. The problem with this is that new ideas are rarely any real use without context and perspective. The context is provided when you have the perspective of joined up thought processes - several new ideas that generate a much bigger idea.

One of the few posts that has been obviously successful, up to this point, is the Top 100 List series by @AdamGT .

There have been lots of great solutions and ideas discussed in the past that have failed to beat the ‘tipping point threshold’. These same ideas can end up being repeated over again and again by different users who don’t join together.

The first Case Study will possibly be:

The Columbus Monument in Barcelona - Once in a lifetime!

(Finding a hidden dog at the top of a 60 metre tower!)

Hi @nigelfreeney

I agree that there are some tough limitations on how we can communicate effectively here on Connect when more posts need to be interlinked.

I use Google Docs to generate such content and then there hours of work needed once I start publishing the content. The issue is that the links to individual posts are unknown until after they are public. I think a new feature to create draft posts could solve most of these problems.

For an example of my interlinked content please see my tutorial called How to Get In and Out of Trouble as a Local Guide over several pages.

That said using the idea exchange as your example is a bit surprising to me. Considering the success rate for getting ideas implemented I would not put a lot of work into creating elaborate content in that section. Just saying.

Maybe I’m not understanding your question correctly, but how can finding a detail in one of your 360 images from an up high drone shot become the center of an elaborate post on Connect? Just asking.

All the best

Morten

PS I remember seeing a quiz where some street view video is used to let the users guess where the footage is from. It took a dedicated server different from Google Maps and Connect.

“… I am intending to write several series of connected posts…”

Firstly, I wish you all the success for your endeavour…

I too have gone through many of the very valuable tutorials by our @MortenCopenhagen - they are very precious and precise - I highly appreciate his valuable efforts, though in LG Connect - I don’t know how many LGs have seen it.

I have also published a Mega Series of articles related to a Single location called Mahabalipuram - so far I have published 47 out of 51 posts. Well… All for our self satisfaction. (Here is the last article).

I have been successful only to generate a dozen or so LGs who followed the above series.

Once again best wishes for your new mission; kindly tag me so that I can I can give my thoughts.

Regards

@nigelfreeney

Let me add that in my next series (it will be on Storefront Photography and how to get more views on Google Maps) I will try a new approach by publishing the overview of the sub-posts first and not last. I hope it will be easier than the other way around. I plan to publish 19 posts over some weeks on this.

Now, please let us know if the feedback you got so far is helping you.

Cheers

Morten

@MortenCopenhagen

It was great to see your intro video about being banned and get a feel for your sense of humour :joy:

I can see that you have a great deal of experience, whereas I am just a the beginning of my journey. I was pleased to see that I don’t have any hidden items so far. I am looking forward to checking out your various posts to see what other traps I can avoid.

The Idea Exchange was simply an example rather than a target. My intention is to find my way slowly and use the feedback of others to guide the direction of travel. The purpose of using the Case Studies idea was that things that I find puzzling or difficult to understand may well be the things that others find difficult to understand. I thought it might be helpful to some Local Guides to use a process that drew a number of different topics together as a sort of package. i.e.

Taking photos that you will only have one chance to get right

  • Planning
  • Equipment
  • What might go wrong and possible workarounds

The depth of your knowledge is clear from reading your articles. One of the things that I find interesting and frustrating, is the inconsistency and lack of transparency in the processes that make up the Local Guides systems. If I can find a way to positively impact on some of those then I would see that as a worthwhile achievement.

I was using a 360 camera on an invisible selfie-stick which gave me a view that was relatively unique. This was a teaser and not meant to be the main focus of case study. Getting the picture raised a number of questions including:

  • Safety of the public
  • Potential damage to the monument
  • Potential damage to the equipment
  • Use of software to get the best image
  • What to do if your forget you remote (I did :see_no_evil: :rofl: )

So I am hoping it will be something helpful and entertaining

@nigelfreeney

I was pleased to see that I don’t have any hidden items so far.

Congratulations. Well done.

All sounds good. I’m looking forward to see and read your posts.

Cheers

Morten

@nigelfreeney Glad that you have tagged me in here :slightly_smiling_face:

And happy to know about this interesting idea of yours. I agree to your concerns and the valuable input.

I’m sure that we all together as a community can bring in engaging and amazing content around the Travel Content…looking forward to it and contribute my best as well.

Best Wishes!

@MortenCopenhagen

I will try a new approach by publishing the overview of the sub-posts first and not last

I had considered that I might have the same approach to the case studies. However, I anticipate that I will not be as organised as some of the established contributors. I thought I would try a format by which I keep updating the original post as I had new articles. I’ll have to use the first case study as a case study :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

The reason that I have chosen to copy a few experienced Local Guides into my posts is because I do find the feedback very helpful. It’s easy to come into a new environment, full of ideas, and really annoy people from the outset - I’m trying my best not to do that :nerd_face: - I am always happy to have my ideas challenged, it’s how they evolve and develop. Of course I enjoy it just as much of people do actually like what I have written :grin: .

@nigelfreeney

Just editing a post with updates is not likely to be seen by many. I suggest adding updates in replies or clearly marked at the top or bottom of your original post.

Cheers

Morten

@MortenCopenhagen

You are correct and I haven’t yet established the best way to interlink the the original and subsequent posts in each series. I suspect that I will do as you suggested by having a link list at the top or bottom of each post.

Thanks,

Nigel

@nigelfreeney

Sounds good.

Once a post has been published we can make hyperlinks to it in other posts.

Cheers

Morten

Thank you for your interesting post @nigelfreeney .

As you know, Connect is essentially a blog where users start posts in one of a number of specific topics such as Photography, Travel, Food & Drink, Local Stories etc., and containing text and images as you’ve done here, and other users reply in kind to these original posts, as I’ve done here. Altogether an original post and its replies can be thought of as a thread. The original posts can also have tags and a language (a special tag) attributed to further categories them and these tags can be thought of as sub-topics which help when users search for posts.

Unlike other “social media” type platforms like Facebook, Insta and Pinterest etc., Connect does provide Original Posters with some, albeit limited, post formatting capability and also allows users to vary the display format such as the sorting order of topics. However, there are limitations (e.g. the post character size limit and very limited HTML functionality) and almost from the very start the leaderboard posts hit these limits. This forced me to come up with ways of achieving my objectives within the constraints of the platform.

However, when it comes to connecting different threads and/or specific reply comments within these, as you mention I so often do, one needs to use the URL links of the original posts and the replies. A good example of this is the star photos leaderboards posts such as the October 2022 Star Photos Leaderboards post. In this monthly post you will see hundreds of “hot links” to individual star photo replies of the hundreds of participating Local Guides “stored” in what I sometimes refer to as the photo album of star photos post. In this way we have a beautiful “tapestry” of tightly interconnected posts and replies all done specifically to provide the best possible user experience of the Top 100 leaderboard posts readers. One can very quickly and easily move from any listing on one of the different leaderboards in the Top 100 post and land on the specific Local Guide’s star photo with it’s full details including an image of the star photo. Within the above mentioned character limitations of Connect, I also cram as much information as I possibly can into the URLs of each star photo listing on the leaderboards, including for example the Google Maps category, and the name of the Place of Interest that the star photos relate to. I mention all this, as aside of the inter-connectivity of the leaderboard posts themselves, there’s quite a lot additional information content. Another example of this is the addition of the country flags of each Local Guide listed in the Country leaderboard posts.

So while it is essentially just a blog, you can create a series of inter-connected posts on Connect but it does take a lot of planning and design, not to mention the time and effort.

Finally, I wanted to also briefly comment on your hidden dog find at the top of the 60 metre Columbus Monument tower, in Barcelona. Things like this always fascinate me and I often find myself digging deeper and researching, trying to find what the meaning of these “hidden” gems are! Gargoyles are good examples of this and I’d love to write a post about it. If I only had time!
