World Paper Bag Day, Paper: The Eco-Friendly Choice

Hello LGs,

Every year on July 12, the world celebrates World Paper Bag Day, also called Paper Bag Day, in honor of the common paper bag—a multipurpose friend that serves many purposes beyond just holding groceries.

Paper bags are becoming more and more popular in today’s environmentally conscious world as a result of plastic’s extensive use and harmful effects on the environment.

Why paper bags?

  1. Paper bags are environmentally beneficial.
  2. Paper bag packaging is regarded as sophisticated and refined. Product packaging in plain bags and eye-catching printed paper bags will undoubtedly give it a competitive advantage.
  3. Because paper bags are composed of renewable resources, recycling them is simple.
  4. Paper bags do not retain toxins and are biodegradable.
  5. Paper bags are reusable as long as they are handled carefully.
  6. Paper bags can be easily composted in a home composter.
  7. Paper bags are useful and reasonably priced.
  8. Paper bags can be easily recycled and turned into other materials, such as books, magazines, and newspapers, because they are made of wood.

Paper bags have the drawback of being excessively porous, which makes it challenging to transport frozen food in one. As a result, the paper bag’s wet strength is not very good.

There is no doubt that using paper bags will have a positive environmental impact. Of course, we should not use too much or waste paper.

Picture 1: Leading companies in my city have chosen to use paper bags instead of plastic ones. Additionally, they decorated it with a few attractive advertisements and or an eco-friendly driving message.

Just for knowledge:

  • Francis Wolle, an American inventor, revolutionized the paper bag industry in 1852 when he received a patent for the first factory.
  • In 1871, Margaret E. Knight improved the design and produced paper bags with a flat bottom, which served as the model for modern foldable bags.
  • In 1883, Walter Deubener introduced reinforced handles, and Charles Stillwell added pleated sides for easier carrying.

Picture 2: I love the recycled bags from newspapers. It’s the easiest way to contribute to an eco-friendly drive.

So let us honor this environmentally friendly companion and make thoughtful decisions for a cleaner Earth on this World Paper Bag Day!

For me and my family:

Typically, we refuse plastic right away and bring our own shopping bags when we go clothes shopping. Avoid paying extra for company bags as well. As an art lover, I will take any interesting, colorful paper bags I come across!

What are your thoughts on this environmentally friendly option, and how can you support it? Please tell me in the comments, and if you have any photos, share them with me.

Cheers!

Hi @AjitThite thanks for sharing your views in this eco-friendly post.

A great initiative to use paper bags, especially, you like recycled bags from newspapers. I teach my students newspaper craft and making of these newspaper bags was the one, which I made mandatory that every student should learn. I am happy that I taught hundreds of students to make paper bag on their own. If possible I can teach our Local Guides too in one of virtual meetups we may have. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to learn.

As I read the post and the replies one more time @AjitThite , I realized that you have asked to share a photo.

I hope the below carton qualifies as a paper bag.

I always retain these sturdy objects to store other important things, instead of purchasing a plastic box from the shops.

I fully agree @AjitThite , however, as you say “bring our own shopping bags” is even better. This also applies to the little plastic bags used for fresh vegetables, unless being forced by law, producer or store to use the provided plastic container.

Thank you for your appreciation. @WilfriedB .

Yes, it applies to all kinds of plastic bags. If you wish to carry some heavy things, you better get some boxes or clothing bags and do not wait for the government to ban them. :grinning:

(I believe most governments have banned or imposed strict rules and regulations on the production of plastic bags.)

This is a big hazard to our earth, and we all need to participate, spread, and follow the restrictions and rules.

There must be many such posters, awareness centers and banners established everywhere, @RaviSharma111 .

Thanks for sharing with us.

Exactly what I was sharing with @RaviSharma111 earlier. Such banners and posters for spreading awareness should be placed almost everywhere, particularly near water bodies.

I support such campaigns, @Annaelisa , thanks for sharing with us.
