Hi Local Guides family! ![]()
I’m thrilled to write my first story here. As a remote worker and a Level 7 Local Guide based in Indonesia, my laptop and Google Maps are my ultimate travel companions. Working remotely gives me the freedom to explore beautiful places, but more importantly, it allows me to give back to the local communities I visit.
Since 2019, I’ve been combining my journey as a digital worker with volunteering, focusing on digital literacy and creative empowerment in places like Lombok, Sumbawa, Semarang, and Sumba.
Bridging the Digital Divide: The Sumba Experience
One of the most memorable chapters of my journey was in Sumba. While Sumba is famous for its breathtaking hills and rich culture, many local youths and community-based tourism groups (Pokdarwis) faced challenges in marketing their local treasures digitally.
I decided to facilitate a “Berani Berkarya” (Dare to Create) workshop. During this initiative:
-
Digital Skills Training: I taught young locals and tourism awareness groups how to use accessible digital tools, from mobile video editing (CapCut) to basic digital marketing strategies and social media storytelling.
-
Photography Contest & Exhibition: We hosted a local photo contest and curated a mini exhibition to highlight their perspectives, showcasing the beauty of their own hometown through their lenses.
-
Empowering Local Gems: I collaborated with local initiatives like Kopi Sumba to capture high-quality footage and photo assets for their social media, helping them build a stronger digital presence to attract visitors.
Seeing their excitement when they posted their first edited video or uploaded photos to Google Maps was priceless. It reminded me that small digital skills can unlock big opportunities for local economies.
What You Can Expect From My Local Guides Profile
For me, being a Local Guide isn’t just about rating places; it’s about making spaces visible, accessible, and useful for everyone. Moving forward, I’ll be sharing:
-
Laptop-Friendly Cafe Reviews: The best spots across Indonesia with reliable Wi-Fi, great coffee, and comfortable workspaces for remote workers.
-
Accessibility & Community Highlights: Showcasing inclusive locations and local social enterprises that empower their surrounding communities.
-
Local Travel & Volunteer Tips: How to explore Indonesia while leaving a meaningful footprint.
I’m always eager to learn, share, and collaborate with fellow Local Guides worldwide.
How do you use your skills to give back to your local community? I’d love to read your stories in the comments below!
Warm regards from Indonesia,
