Hello, Local Guides!
Continuing our Women & Allied Series, today we’re excited to introduce Sarah, a passionate Level 5 Local Guide from Nigeria. She is a Global Shaper, which is a wonderful initiative by the World Economic Forum, one that inspires her to make a positive impact in her community and beyond. Let’s get to know her! Here is candid Rendezvous with @BeingSarahh !
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey as a Local Guide?
[Sarah]: As a young girl from Adamawa State in northern Nigeria, I’ve always been fascinated by travel. While I’ve only been to Ghana and other states in Nigeria so far, my love for exploring new places has taken me all over the world, thanks to the books I’ve read and the movies I’ve watched. Whenever a place is described in a story, I imagine myself there, experiencing it firsthand. Before I traveled to Ghana, I would often stand in front of my mirror and pretend to be a travel vlogger, saying things like, “Hi guys, this is Sarah, come with me as I travel to Accra, Ghana.” I did this so often that one day, after coming back from a birthday dinner, I saw a message from the Global Shapers Yola hub curator asking who wanted to go to Accra. I responded enthusiastically, and that led me to a link for the Climate Reality Leadership Training — and the rest, as they say, is history. Visiting Accra and immersing myself in its rich culture opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that await me. I have a strong feeling that the world is full of adventures just waiting to be discovered. If you want to follow along on my journey, check me out on Instagram, where I share my travels and experiences.
What inspires you to be a Local Guide?
[Sarah]: I love helping people discover new places. A schoolmate of mine from Bingham University is currently studying at the Law School campus in Yola, and she often asks me for directions to different spots around town. While I’m always happy to help, it got me thinking about all the others who are new to the area and might not have any idea where to go. That’s what inspired me to become a local guide — so I can assist others in exploring the state.
What’s your favorite feature of Google Maps?
[Sarah]: One of my favorite features is the “add photo” option. It’s my favorite because you get to have an idea of where you are going to. I’m passionate about photography and love sharing the pictures I take with others.
What message would you give to other Women Local Guides or anyone considering joining our Local Guides program ?
[Sarah]: You are worthy and your dreams are valid!
