❌ Why Is Google Removing the Follow Feature on Maps?

Hi everyone,

I just came across the announcement that, starting September 2025, we’ll no longer be able to follow Google Maps contributors or have profile followers. Honestly, I’m a bit upset about this change.

For me (and I’m sure for many of you), the follow feature is what made it easy for friends, fellow travelers, and the Local Guides community to pin my lists directly to their own maps. It’s such a simple way to share recommendations when someone is traveling — whether it’s favorite bars, restaurants, coffee shops, or local gems.

Yes, I know we can still create and share lists, but they can’t follow the list anymore to make it easily accessible on their device. Removing this feels like we’re losing one of the most community-driven parts of Google Maps.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Has anyone heard why Google decided to take this away?
:backhand_index_pointing_right: How do you all plan to share your recommendations with friends and the community once this feature is gone?

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Hopefully Google reconsiders, because this feature really helps Local Guides keep Maps more social and connected.

Hi @savannahgreenexo

Following lists is not affected by the sunsetting of the follow feature. Some months back our lists disappeared from our Maps profile pages. So your followers can not easily find your lists under your profile.

We need to share the links to our lists separately like you just did here.

I understand you are not happy with Google ending the follow feature. I have not seen any official reasoning, but plenty of guesses are presented in this discussion:
