Whenever I travel across Kerala, I find myself drawn not just to famous attractions, but to the small family-run businesses that give each place its unique character.
It could be a tiny tea shop on a misty roadside in Munnar, a family-owned bakery in Kozhikode, a seafood restaurant overlooking the backwaters, or a local handicraft store tucked away in a quiet village. These are the places where you often experience genuine hospitality, authentic flavours, and stories that don’t appear in travel brochures.
I’ve realised that many of these businesses rely heavily on word of mouth. Some have very few reviews on Google Maps, while others have none at all. A thoughtful review, a few clear photos, or an update about opening hours can make it much easier for travellers to discover them and decide to visit.
As a Local Guide, I enjoy contributing in small but meaningful ways. Whenever I visit a place, I try to:
-
Add honest reviews based on my experience.
-
Upload photos that show the food, atmosphere, and surroundings.
-
Verify business details such as opening hours and contact information.
-
Answer questions from other visitors whenever I can.
One memorable experience was discovering a small local café that served one of the best cups of Kerala-style tea I’ve ever had. It wasn’t listed prominently, and there were only a handful of reviews. After sharing my experience and photos, I noticed more people began visiting and leaving their own reviews. Watching a local business gain visibility through community contributions was incredibly rewarding.
For me, being a Local Guide isn’t just about earning points or reaching the next level. It’s about helping travellers make informed choices while supporting the hardworking people behind Kerala’s small businesses.
Every review has the potential to guide someone’s journey. Every photo can inspire a visit. Every contribution helps make Google Maps a little more useful for everyone.
I’d love to hear from other Local Guides, what’s your favourite small business you’ve discovered through Google Maps?
