Hello,
Have you ever wondered why people contribute to google maps? I mean, they spend time to add new places, comment, review restaurants… so either they waste their time, or they have a good reason. I can’t speak for everyone, but I will give you my incentives to … waste my time contributing ![]()
A few years back, I used Mapstr. It is an app for listing restaurants you like, listing places you want to visit, listing coffees someone talked about… It was OK. Not the best user interface, but hey, I used it as my “restaurant location” storage and at that time nothing else was close to this functionality.
Then google maps released these “saved, want to go, starred” and “custom lists” feature. Thanks to its huge community, it killed the game, bringing ratings everywhere in the world where Mapstr was too small. Now, whenever I travel abroad and I am looking for a place to eat, it’s easy:
- Google maps “restaurant”
- Add a filter “4 stars of more”
BTW, it would be great to have a filter “more than 50 reviews” there is space for improvement here @googlemaps - Click on “open now”
- Look at the most reviewed places. I mean, for the same rating, a place with 245 reviews worth more than one with only 7 reviews.
To be honest, the last thing Mapstr still does better in my opinion, is sharing one of your list of places to a friend.
But then, if I use this all the time abroad, it’s because I rely on people to rate places, comment etc… In order for this social contribution system to work, I need to bring something myself as well: that’s why I do it in Paris as much as I can. Moreover, it has happened to me to forget about some places I loved in the past. When I want to come back, it is so nice to have everything at my disposal on the map!
Hope it helps, in case you are still not contributing!!!
Cheers
