Why do some photos get drastically more views than others?

Hi @jasonross1234 and @Speedworm

Here are some of the reasons some photos get a ton of views:

Each place/pin has one photo at the top. We call this photo the cover photo. When ever a place is shown with only one image (like in search results lists) only the cover photo will be shown.

Cover photos are selected by the Photo AI. So if you can take photos that the AI likes/prefer then you will get a ton of views.

The number of views also depend on the popularity of the pin.

The likelihood of getting your photo selected as a cover photo also depends on how many photos are already uploaded to the place. It is close to impossible for your photos to be selected (and featured) if there are already thousands of great photos under the pin.

Featured means among the first 10 images.

Knowing what the AI prefers is key. It likes bright photos with lots of natural colors. High contrast is also good. Landscape orientation is way better that portrait. And your image should be helpful in helping Maps users find the place. So a photo of the entrance with the name of the place is preferred. Your chances to get the cover or at least getting features increase if you follow these tips.

Go study your most views photos and the most viewed photos by other local guides. Feel free to open my maps profile and sort my photos by views. Learn from others.

I just starred a new series on store front photography with many more tips on getting more views.

Also the leaderboards can be a huge inspiration.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
