Why do I keep getting asked for photos and reviews of places I have merely searched for ?? There is one place I keep getting review request for the last time I even went near the place was 15yrs ago

A very good question, which has been asked here on Connect many times, but until now, I haven’t seen any response to it 
We can only ignore those questions. Personally, I make sure not to respond to any of those accidentally, since this could be provable wrong answer - I believe.

Often Google Maps is very helpful. This is surely the opposite. Another parallel issue is suggesting users to upload photos to wrong places and upload photos that have already been uploaded. Uploading duplicates is mentioned in the guidelines as a serious offence, still users are prompted repeatedly to do so!
There is very much room for improvements here.
For now: Just ignore as @WilfriedB suggested.

As you can read on your “Contribute” page in the App: Places are based on your searches, location and more.
Unfortunately you cannot exclude just the results of the searches from your notifications. From your settings page you can only choose if you want to be notified about contributing with reviews and photos.
The possibility to change the settings, giving us the possibility to exclude searches, could be an interesting subject here in Connect, to ask Google to create a more granular filter
