"What Would Google Do?"

I have read this book “What Would Google Do?”, and I wanted to share some insights with you all about it, to understand more why we do, what we do as Local Guides.

Jeff Jarvis, the writer, is a well-known journalist and wrote it in 2009. Google was emerging back then and was obviously not as big as it is know. This book is not all about Google, and important to know, was not written from the POV of Google. No, Jeff is analyzing the business of Google very thoroughly and how it is impacting other businesses and generally, the world.

It is so interesting to read that even though it was published before 2009, he understood so well that Google is leveraging each and every thing from users—Giving users control to gain their trust!

Just take a moment to think back, like I did several times during reading and ask yourself a few questions:

  • Do you remember the era before Google? The era where not every single piece of information is available just 0.01 second away from your fingertips.
  • Take a second to think about how Google completely changed your life as well.
  • When did you start using Google? Were there some people who used other search engines such as Bing or Yahoo?
  • Which products of Google do you use?

Think about how Google, just one company, COMPLETELY changed the way businesses work. Now, to actually make a business work, it almost cannot survive without being in the top results of the Google search page for your keywords, right?

As an entrepeneur myself, I can only highly recommend this book to everyone who is an entrepeneur as well.

Even if you are not an entrepeneur, you should read this book as a Local Guide. Googlers, if you read my post, you SHOULD read this book!

Enough of my words, let me paraphrase some of Jeff’s most interesting sections in the book.

Many of this can be linked to the Local Guides program, and makes me an even more proud Local Guide!

“Google understands the value of free better than anyone.”

“Serve the niche well, rather than the mass badly.”

“Focus on networking. Keep your customers happy all the time, reply to their complaints, take the time to turn those into happy customers again”

"The more you control, the less you will be trusted; the more you hand over control, the more trust you will earn.

Too many companies have been built not on trusting people but on making rules and prohibitions, telling customers what they cannot do, and penalizing them for doing wrong. Google has built its empire on trusting us. Trust Google on this."

The true essence of the Local Guides program, from a business perspective!

“Google provides the culture of choice.”

“Google Ad specialist’ boss after losing 1 M dollars: “I’m so glad you made this mistake, because I want to run a company where we are moving too quickly and doing too much, not being too cautious and doing too little.”

“It’s best to do one thing really, really well.”

“Google realizes that its real value is not in limiting what people can do but in helping them do what only they can imagine.”

“Collaborate. Collaboration is co-creation.”

“Google is an avalanche and it has only just begun to tumble down the mountain.”

“Trust the people. Your customers are your ad agency.”

Thanks a lot for reading until here, much appreciated!

Leave a comment behind with the questions on the answers above if you’d like.

Stay safe and beautiful,

Stephen

This is a well-written article and nice to read @Stphn

Do you remember the era before Google?

However, I remember the years before Google came to the scene when Yahoo! search was an equally fast and reliable search engine and general inquiries could be made on Ask Jeeves.

It’s only that Google rode on the ever-increasing popularity and reach of the internet across all age-groups in the entire world and had they not innovated the way they did, it could have been easily someone else.

It was only that Google did it first hence conquered the search engine market. Microsoft’s powerful Bing search engine could not beat Google with all its might and fight because they were late to the party.

@Stphn As a reading enthusiast and Google fan, I was very attracted to your post :grinning:
I’m definitely going to try to get this book.
Of course I remember life before Google, but I definitely prefer to have it in my life
I use almost all of Google’s applications, and the only ones I don’t use are not yet available in my country.
It is precisely because of the gratitude I feel towards Google that I reciprocate its services with my voluntary contributions to Google Map and Crowdsource. I I feel that it’s the least I can do!!
Thank you for your valuable recommendation. I love that we of discussing books in this space :hugs:
Greetings from Argentina!

for example now I prefer to do Googling or Google Translate than open my thick dictionary.

How easy Google help my life style.

Hi there my friend, @TusharSuradkar , thanks a lot for your kind words!

Indeed, Yahoo and Google were pretty equal at a certain point. But the business models are opposites from each other, at least in a certain way.

Yahoo was more like a self-controlled business, by pushing information to its users. At a certain point even ads appeared on the homepage, which made me turn away from Yahoo search! Google never did that. Google never had ads on its homepage, but created a genius business model by giving control to its users. People were connecting each other via banners on websites, linking to others, while clicks gave money through Adwords and Adsense. In the same time, this was feed for their Google search. Win win!

I don’t completely agree with you about that it was one of the first that it conquered its business. There might have been dozens of other search engines with Yahoo’s business model, and they would all have been destroyed by the innovative business model of Google, even though it would have appeared years later, I believe. (and usually in any branche, the first companies to discover anything new, mostly do not survive as competitors steal their ideas and innovate more fast in some way).

Stay safe buddy!

hi there @CaroGuiniazu , great to see a reply from you!

That is so true what you are writing, I cannot think about a life without Google anymore. And for me it is also the reason why I started contributing as well!

Please let me know your thoughts about the book after reading, I am curious.

Take care Carolina!

Thanks for reading, @BudiFXW !

It truly is visionary, and that is the very interesting part to be honest to read it many years later.

I don’t remember him specifically saying something about the OKR method, perhaps it was not described specifically as OKR. Could you please elaborate a bit about it?

OKR is Objective and Key Result.

How a team set up an objective with quality and quantity and deadline time.

Key Results are activities that significantly make the objective is achieve.

John Doer r use and spread this method to Google and many others company.

Detail can be seen on Youtube with keyword John Doerr or OKR or Objective and Key Results.

Hope this can help you.
