For most people, national monuments are simply landmarks to commemorate national figures or significant events. But for me, they hold a deeper meaning. On July 20th, I visited Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument) in Surabaya, one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. This monument is built to honor the Indonesian freedom fighters who died during the Battle of Surabaya on November 10, 1945. Standing 41.15 meters tall, the monument is shaped like an inverted nail, symbolizing the spirit of resistance.
For me, national monuments have three key meanings, which can be summarized into 3R: Remembrance, Recreation, and Reconnection
- REMEMBRANCE
National monuments help us remember the sacrifices, struggles, and achievements of those who came before us. In Surabaya, Tugu Pahlawan stands not just as a monument, but as a symbol of sacrifice, unity, and resilience. By remembering the bravery of those who fought in the Battle of Surabaya, we honor their legacy and learn from their courage.
2. RECREATION
What I love most about national monuments is their location—usually right in the center of the city, making them accessible for everyone. They’re not just for remembering the past, but also great places to relax and have fun. Whether it’s a family picnic, jogging, enjoying street food, or just a “me-time”, there’s always something to do. When I visited Tugu Pahlawan, I was so happy to see the 10 November Museum right beneath it. It’s the perfect spot to explore history in a fun way. I was even more surprised to get opportunity to watch an open-air theatrical show which is played occasionally there. The performance is presented by Front Kolosal Soerabaja.
3. RECONNECTION
National monuments aren’t just about history. They’re also about people and memories. At places like Tugu Pahlawan, we can meet up with old friends and also make new ones. Imagine it might be the place where someone meet their first love :). On July 20th, I came to Tugu Pahlawan as a part of Meet Up Nusantara ke-4 (MUN4) event, organized by SurabayaRaya Local Guides. I felt as if the past meets the future. I remember good old days when my parents brought me here and also I started new friendships with 150 amazing Local Guides from all over Indonesia.
That’s all 3R I got by visiting a national monument: Remembrance, Recreation and Reconnection.
So, what do national monuments mean to you? Please share your thoughts and comments below. Thank you.
