According to National Geographic, a dish that is popular with residents and forming part of a country’s identity while becoming an essential experience for visitors could be identified as a national dish.
Jamaica’s signature breakfast, ackee and saltfish is regarded as its national dish. Ackee is a fruit that grows locally is served as scrambled eggs with fried or boiled dumplings with a side of saltfish cooked in a small amount of oil with peppers and onions added for taste.
Every holy or auspicious event in Sri Lanka is celebrated with Kiribath. This is milk rice: freshly harvested rice cooked with coconut cream. Usually it is served hot or cold on a banana leaf with crushed red peppers, onion and lemon juice, must be Sri Lanka’s national dish.
Thanks @FelipePK for your contribution. I agree with you, Feijoada is a heavy pork stew of great flavors. It is available in Boteco Brasil menu in Vancouver BC Canada. It is funny they serve it there with plain Indian Basmati Rice. When I tried Feijoada during Rio Olympics the side was Brzilian white rice cooked in broth. That itself is worth the experience.
@user_not_found@user_not_found@user_not_found@user_not_found@user_not_found@user_not_found@user_not_found What is your National Dish. Please share it with us.
@RohithaF , the cool thing about living in America, we are a “melting pot” of cuisines - it’s not one “national dish”:
Chinese - chow mein, dim sum, BBQ Pork (char siu)
Japanese - sushi, ramen, tempura, chicken or beef teriyaki
Mexican - tacos, burritos, black beans, tortilla chips, salsa
Italian - pasta, pizza, espresso, prosecco, chianti, cannoli, gelato
American - hot dogs, hamburgers, malted milkshakes, apple pie, cherry pie, peach pie, french fries, corn on the cobb, banana splits, Thanksgiving Turkey
Thai - pad thai, Thai BBQ
Vietnamese - pho
Indian - naan, butter chicken, tandoori, chutney, lassi, dal
French - croissants, baguette, escargot, champagne, Bordeaux
The amazing thing about living here. I can eat all of this in one day if I wanted to. Burp!

I still remember the most delicious beef and fish dishes you and @SoniaK shared with us on our way back from Yosemite, as if it was yesterday. Is the above fish dish cooked in coconut milk? What is the name of the fish? Is this Darkina?
Thanks for the post. In Toronto Kensington Market we have a few competing empanada joints. I do not which one is Argentinian. You may Identify. May be they are all Mexican
@FaridTDF , my understanding is your country, Argentina, has the best tasting beef in the world and red wine. Grass feed. Grilled. Lots of great tasting wine that’s also inexpensive.
They are really famous for the barbecue, very well known for the great quality of the beef they make. We are not that behind but definitely I would choose their barbecue.
oooh @RohithaF, you’ve got the more “playful” types of poutine there.
I had a friend visit over the weekend, we went for the more traditional one with just the fresh cheese curds and gravy.
They say you know if the cheese is fresh if you can hear it squeak as you eat it. This particular one came from Costco. McDonald’s does a great version of the traditional poutine if you like their kind of fries.

@FaridTDF , you said the magic word “malbec” - I am a “full body” gal! @ErmesT@AlejandraMaria , have you ever tried a Malbec? "Delicious " in any language.
@RohithaF , we, the bengalis are known as Mache-Bhaate bangali. Which means, mach (fish) and bhaat (rice) is what we are most famous for. And that’s what our main dishes are. we do not have a complete meal unlike many other countries that we can call it as our national dish. But as @MahabubMunna mentioned in his comment, a platter with rice, fish, a little daal, that is what our main dishes are. The fish that Munna shared is of Hilsa aka Ilish, which is our national fish. You will find very few Bengalis (including the ones from India) who don’t like (or should I say love) Ilish. The fish that you ate at Yosemite was Ilish too. A crispy fried piece of Hilsa, with rice and a bowl of thick daal (lentil), with a side of mango pickle, a heavenly combination for most of the Bangladeshis. (Just by thinking of the platter has just made me drool)
Thanks @SoniaK nice to hear from you. Hope you are busy packing up.
@AnuradhaP and @IlankovanT would you agree with me, I think national l dish of Sri Lanka could be milk rice ( kiribath or paal soru), rice cooked in coconut cream, for the same set of reasons you mentioned; rice and coconut are so in abundance in the island nation.
Like @HiroyukiTakisawa san in Japan @NandKK bhaee and @prakashchawla bhaee may have so many regionally identified national dishes due to vast geopolitical and cultural diversity within.
