Good question @TorM

The Hostaria is a term used mostly in central Italy. It is the archaic form of the word Osteria, but actually the meaning is changed a bit.

Hostería is a place where they serve food, and many famous restaurants use the name Hostaria.

Osteria is a Place where to drink, mostly whine, and to have some simple food.

Trattoria is an economic restaurant, that serve a limit number of dishes. Normally they have a traditional (Local) menu.

Pizzeria is a restaurant that serve pizza

Taverna, is an ancient name of a place that serve food, like the Hostería

Ristorante is the Italian translation of restaurant

Tavola calda Is the Italian version of the Fast Food

Ok that it

My vision:

L’Hostaria is the English/international name of osteria

Trattoria Is a small restaurant that provides food in a really small kitchen

L’Osteria the osteria name with a grammatical article like THE in English

Osteria is a small restaurant that provides for sure wine. In this place you can also pick just a glass of wine.

Pizzeria is a place where people can order pizza. Usually we have the pizzeria restaurant that provide only pizza in a dish or the smaller pizzeria open almost all day that provides pizza only in SLICE FORMAT (if you go in a pizza restaurant you can’t order a single pizza slice, if you go in a small pizzeria isn’t impossible to don’t have a table, and for sure you haven’t a waiter… You can pick your single slice of pizza and eat inside or in takeaway node.

Taverna is an old form, usually we can have a taverna in a medieval folk festival, in a Town Event we can find a temporary restaurant named taverna.

Ristorante: stand-alone or inside an hotel, is a place that usually provides lunch and dinner ad specific time.

Usually all this place is open between 12 and 14.30 and for dinner from 19 to 22.

I can suggest to add:

Bar (a place to bring a coffee, a cappuccino, an orange juice or a grappa)

Pasticceria or panetteria sometimes with a caffè inside, this place can have fresh baked croissant and pizza in just 1-3 different types (for example only focaccia or tomato pizza)

Fast food (you know, is international)

Tavola calda (like fast food, with food already prepared but with dish like pasta, salad… Beef…)

Pub a place where you can keep a beer or french fries or an hamburger

Bye! Emanuele
