What happened when i searched "google maps" in google.co.za

Hi everyone,

I found an interesting phenomenon in Google search… now for any of you who know how the algorithms work, would frown upon this result in google’s auto links that sometimes appear below the top search result with supposedly meaningful site links that help new/return customers browse straight into the page they might be looking for. How Google works that out I presume is mostly through user tracking via analytics and such, to come up with “the most popular” pages, etc.

Right, having said that, take a peek at this… If you know anyone within the Google maps dev teams that work on these results, they might want to see this too.

And when clicking the link it took me to the most random place ever, and the marker location is many kilometers from where we are based. Anyhow I thought I would share this strange anomaly

Very odd results indeed from Google search. Have a good day from sunny South Africa

Hi @Greg-Keet this is unlikely to have come from Maps but is more likely from Local Search and yes its an interesting artefact of the search. You might like to report this with supporting screen shots, links and where you are in the world over at the Search Community https://support.google.com/websearch/community where you will find product experts ready to help. They are able to explain why its like that, or escalate up if it shouldn’t be.

Hi there Paul, thanks for the helpful reply. I shall do so definitely. It’s just that the link shown is arguably the most unuseful link ever. And being a former SEO person and knowing how good Google Brain (almost) always is, it really struck a chord.

Hello @Greg-Keet ,

Thank you for reaching out.

I am going to move your post to the How-tos section on Connect, the place where Local Guides share and ask questions related to Connect and Google Maps.

Please take some time to read the following article which will help you in the Community: How to choose a topic for your Connect post.

Hi @BorrisS , thanks for helping. I am clearly very new to how things work here. Thanks for the read suggestion, that page is duly bookmarked for reference. I did report this search anomaly on Google search as well, where one can submit a screenshot from the call to action at the bottom of all search results pages.
