Food as the heart of the culture
Before I travel to a new place I always read about the history of the country or the city or the area and try to check what is the best way to know the place.
I have a visual memory so I remember most of the places and the locations I want to see when I get to my destination. But the only thing I’m not checking is about the food and the restaurants, I’m always waiting to arrive and meet local people that usually later become my friends and it’s thanks to the food, I’m asking them the right questions in order to find the most local and not touristic places in town.
But I learned that doesn’t matter how much I read and try to understand the culture of the place, the best way is with food and not just food, a really local authentic food. This mostly can be easily found by locals and I’m lucky to have friends all over the world to always send me to these local restaurants or food markets to really feel the environment and the people. I believe that food connects people in many different ways because when you have food you are happy and when you have friends around you with good food you are super happy.
When I first get to a restaurant I’m not immediately publishing and share my experience in Local Guides, although it might be a mistake because I’m always taking pictures of what I’m eating but if I’m really enjoying the company I’m having and the food I sometimes forget to share it.
So my process is to first enjoy the place, understand the atmosphere, having an experience, chacking what it has to offer and of course the food, the food is important. In the end, if I don’t forget, I’m checking the reviews and the photos of the place and see if there is anything I can add or contribute.
To be huonst I’m always surprised to see and to get those emails that my posts are helping people, I always like to help but mainly if I can share my love for food with others.
I know I can do more, I have lots of photos I can share, I’m better with photos than writing, maybe now will be a great time to share these memories while we are locked at home…
So, in the end, the Local Guides help me to share my experience with others mainly about food, because I think all of us like good food.
