I live in (and come from) an island, which implies that we have a pretty diverse amount of beaches and coastal areas.
While many cities and countries don’t have beaches, for those like me born in coastal towns such as Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), it is normal to make day trips to the beach. As a curious fact, part of that normalcy includes what we eat and drink. However, the gastronomic elections vary dramatically depending on factors like the type of beach and who you are with.
The food will be left for another post because if not, this one might become too long.
When it comes to the drinks, Dominicans mostly fall into four categories: 1) Beer, 2) Rum, 3) Cocktails, 4) Non-alcoholic drinks.
The dominance in the Dominican beer market is unquestionable, being the absolute leader a brand named Presidente. Its beer type is Pilsner, it has a good body, a slightly bitter after taste, and it is notoriously refreshing because it is mainly consumed a few degrees before freezing. In fact, when ordering it, it is popular to hear the idiomatic phrase: “dressed like a bride”. What does that mean? When the bottle shows some frosted ice on the outside, without freezing the liquid contained on the inside.
In the photo accompanying this post, you can see my Pegman and a bottle of Presidente, partially buried in the creamy sand of Cabarete, Puerto Plata.
Tell me, what do you like to drink when you go to the beach or the swimming pool?
Great post @Marichams ! I had to do a quick online search and read up on lager and Pilsner just to understand a bit better about beer! As you can tell, I’m not a big drinker of beer… my drink of choice on the beach is an ice cold lemonade … dressed like a bride would be preferred to counter the hot weather! But I’m also very much biased towards cocktails as I like my drinks sweet and colourful!
You will not believe, but I LOVE to drink only water )))
No coffee, no tea, no soda, just coke sometimes… But somehow i am a big fan of fresh clean and tasty clear water since I lived in the mountains in Ukraine.
Incredible, how your childhood habits and tastes influence you allll life long )))
@Marichams Agua. Agua, y cerveza. Y si estamos cerca de un restaurante, entonces piña colada, o cuba libre. Debajo de una palma tropical en las preciosas playas de nuestro Caribe
