A few weeks ago, I visited the EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin. After the tour, I needed to find the restrooms (which, by the way, were perfectly indicated on Google Maps). Being a passionate Local Guide, I decided to leave a review and uploaded a couple of photos—including one of the AED (defibrillator) located right near the entrance.
Shortly after, I received the classic notification: “Your photo is featured.”
To my great surprise, the algorithm didn’t pick the entrance or the signs; it featured the photo of the defibrillator. This made me realize that the system already recognizes (or is learning to recognize) the immense value of these life-saving devices.
The AED Dilemma on Google Maps
We have discussed defibrillators many times here on Connect. A recent comment by @JanVanHaver on a post by @Gamayun84 perfectly summarizes why they matter:
However, we also know the main obstacle: legal liability and data accuracy. If a restaurant is closed, a user experiences a minor inconvenience. If an AED is missing, expired, or locked inside a closed building during an emergency, the consequences can be fatal. Classic crowdsourcing alone cannot guarantee the 100% real-time accuracy needed for medical emergencies.
The Solution: A “Google Transit” Model for Health
This got me thinking. What if we borrowed a system that Google already uses successfully?
Think about Google Transit: public transport companies upload and maintain their official schedules directly. Users can’t alter the official timetables, but the data is always verified.
Why not create “Google Health” (or a dedicated AED layer) using the exact same logic?
- Verified Data Ingestion: Local health authorities, municipalities, or certified AED maintenance companies upload and own the POI data. They are the only ones who can add, remove, or update the technical status and availability hours.
- AI as the Bridge: To solve the issue of different database formats used by various local governments, Google’s AI could easily act as a “universal translator,” migrating and standardizing messy local data into Google’s ecosystem seamlessly and at zero cost for the municipalities.
- The Local Guides’ Touch (Micro-Navigation): While users wouldn’t be able to change the core data, Local Guides would provide the ultimate value asset: Visual Context.
- Our Photos would show exactly where the AED is (e.g., “On the left wall right before the turnstiles”). In an emergency, those 30 seconds saved by a photo can save a life.
- Our Reviews could add helpful logistics (e.g., “Accessible from the street via a keypad”).
A Win-Win for Local Communities
Many local administrations already maintain internal databases of their AEDs. Offering them an official channel to display this on Google Maps would be an incredible public utility. It would also give forward-thinking municipalities and local mayors a great opportunity to be recognized as pioneers in public safety and smart-city innovation.
