The Local Guides Team clearly operates on a yearly budget, so I doubt any announcements will be shared before early next year.
The invitation process favours those being active and helpful on both Connect and Google Maps.
Hopefully, there will be more live events coming. Keep an eye on the front page of Connect under Featured Topics.

In addition to the answer from @MortenCopenhagen , let me add a few tips:
In case of events, Google prioritize active Local Guides with great contributions. Our great contributions in Maps are not an option, but a priority not only to have the possibility to be invited, but also not to be removed from Google Maps.
Let me explain: you take great photos, but when in a place you take multiple photos you should remember to choose only the best one, and not to post all the series of very similar photos. This in in fact not only a bad behaviour, but it is also forbidden by the policies.
Even more dangerous is to post the same photo in more than one place. This action is strictly forbidden, and the sanction is the removal from the Local Guides program.
So I suggest you to make a deep clean-up of your contributions and to be active here in Connect with interesting posts. And of course, to keep the fingers crossed for the future event.
