Wallajah Big Mosque devotional history of Stone, Spirit, and Legacy

Standing in Triplicane since 1795, the Wallajah Big Mosque is a masterpiece of granite craftsmanship and enduring faith. Commissioned by Nawab Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, its twin white minarets crowned with golden finials frame a façade of majestic arches. Inside, cool granite pillars and lofty vaults create a calm, airy prayer space, anchored by a gold-edged mihrab inscribed with Quranic verses.

The courtyard holds a serene ablution tank (hauz) and the graves of the Arcot royal family, scholars, and Nawabs. Most revered is the Dargah of Saint Maulana Abdul Ali Baharul Uloom (Hijri 1225), where devotees believe prayers can heal speech ailments — a tradition alive for over two centuries.

Still vibrant with Friday prayers, Ramadan nights, and Sufi gatherings, the mosque is both a historical landmark and a living sanctuary where stone strength meets the gentle heart of devotion..
