I’ve walk the route you see on maps and during my walk I’ve seen all these beautiful places:
You can start at Maria Theresien Platz, where you can finde the National Art History Museum and The Nature History Museum. These two Museums are close to each other and look like twins. For visiting them, you should plan a whole day, because there are so many interesting things to see and discover. Also a great tip for rainy days and for kids.
After a visit in the museum you can walk for about 10 minutes and you’ll come to the Michaelerplatz in the Center of the first district. There are also great places like the Vienna Riding School (with the white horses), the Heros’s Square, the Hofburg, the National Library and many more.
When you have left the Michaelerplatz, you come to the Street “Am Kohlmarkt” with lots of famose shops like Karl Lagerfeld, Armani etc.
When you’ve finished your shopping trip, you can visit the greatest church of Vienna … The St. Stephan’s Cathedral or how we Austrian call it “Steffl”.
If you have a little time left, you should go inside and visit the church and the roof of the church. You can get up by lift or by stairs…but take care, there are 343 steps ?
Close to the Church, there is a great ice store - Zanoni - I love it, best ice cream in Vienna ?
When you walk a few minutes, you see the Museum “Albertina”. There are great art exhibitions with famose painters from all over the year. If you only have a little time, I would do a reservation to get in quicklier.
Next to the Albertina, there is the Vienna Opera, where you can see famose operas, operettes and other events through the whole year. Every year in February, the Opera Ball takes place with lots of international stars.
Behind the Opera, there is The Hotel Sacher, where you can buy the lovely (and super expensive) Sachertorte (Sacher Cake). Lots of tourists are waiting in front of the Hotel and the Shop to get in…crazy ? I mean, the cake is great, but in my opinion too expensive and I don’t want to wait for more than an hour for an overprized piece of cake ?
And in the end…you’ll come to my favorite place of Vienna…Karlsplatz ?
It’s a great place in summer and in Winter. During the whole summer, there is water in front of the church like a little lake. That looks super great at night, when the lights are on and you see the reflection of the church in the water. Love that. Some guys are walking around and sell cold beer and wine. In winter there is a Christmas market and the whole place is lighted and everything smells like Christmas. It’s a market for handmade stuff and no cheap plastics.
Very close to the Karlsplatz, there is the Secession, a modern place for art and exhibitions. It’s about 5 minutes walking from Karlsplatz. It’s a great building with a golden bullet on its roof. It looks great, when the sun is shining through the bullet.
If you are hungry after your walk, you can visit the famose Naschmarkt. The word “Naschmarkt” means something like “snack market”, a place where you can taste delicious food from all over the world, India, Italy, Austria…Very expensive, but the atmosphere is worth it.
I hope, you enjoyed the tour through my city and if you have any questions, feel free to ask my or tell me when you are coming here, so maybe we can meet ?
