My favourite way of getting around is on foot. Walking is the perfect way to discover places, as the pace is slow enough to notice things that we might miss if in a vehicle, or even zooming by on a bicycle. I use Google Maps daily to check different routes from one place to another and I usually try to find quiet routes away from heavy traffic and preferably through parks. Quiet streets can also be very charming and full of fun discoveries.
I find that if I ever feel stressed or anxious, a good walk sorts out my thoughts and feelings and I actually map my thought process over the path I take. Insights become entwined with the places I had them, and this helps me remember them. If a friend is feeling anxious or troubled, I usually suggest we go on a walk, and as we travel together and talk, they tend to gain some peace and clarity. I believe walking is healing and brings us peace, especially walks in nature where we get to smell the earth and the trees, and we hear that there are other animals sharing these spaces with us.
I wish Google Maps had an option to optimise routes that prioritise quiet and green paths. I would be happy to mark such routes as I discover them, so that other people could enjoy them as well
