Voluntary GIS Mapping for the Arbaeen Pilgrimage – Iraq’s Largest Annual Event

I’m honored to share a fully self-developed geospatial guide for the Arbaeen pilgrimage (1446 AH) – one of the world’s largest peaceful gatherings.
As a Google Maps Local Guide (Level 10), I independently completed all stages of this project:
- Field-based data collection across southern and central Iraq
- GIS route design and satellite validation
- Graphic design and production of a high-resolution guide map
The result is a unified visual guide that:
- Features over 14 major walking routes
- Maps 97+ checkpoints, religious centers, and service hubs
- Supports millions of pilgrims traveling to Karbala, Iraq
This project is an example of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) in action — bridging tradition, geospatial technology, and service.
