VITM: Science Exhibits 🚀, Accessibility Challenges ⚙️

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), Bangalore: A Treasure Trove of Knowledge, But Accessibility Needs Attention :gear::microscope::rocket:

The Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), established by the Government of India in honor of Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, is a fascinating destination. Inside, you’ll find a wealth of engaging exhibits, including:

  • Engine Hall :locomotive:
  • ElectroTechnic Gallery :high_voltage:
  • Fun Science :test_tube:
  • Space Technology Gallery :satellite:
  • Biotechnology Gallery :dna:
  • Science for Kids :child:
  • BEL-Hall of Electronics :laptop:
  • Dinosaur Enclave :t_rex:
  • Wright Brothers’ Aeroplane :airplane:
  • Science on a Sphere :globe_showing_europe_africa:
  • 3D Show :clapper_board:
  • Science Park :deciduous_tree:
  • Seed of Culture Exhibition Inauguration :seedling:
  • Mars Rover Opportunity Inauguration :robot:

To truly experience the working models and grasp the fundamental science and engineering concepts behind everyday items (like weighing scales, locks, zips, and running water), plan for at least 3-4 hours. It’s an enriching experience for everyone, not just children. I’m eager to return with my family! :family_man_woman_girl_boy:

Accessibility: A Mixed Bag :wheelchair_symbol:

I was initially pleased to see ramps throughout the museum, ensuring smooth access from the entrance to all the halls. However, the elevator, despite the accessibility symbol, proved too small to comfortably accommodate a wheelchair and an assistant. This is a significant oversight.

A more critical issue is the placement of bathrooms. They are all located mid-staircase, rendering them completely inaccessible to wheelchair users. I searched diligently but couldn’t find any visible signs or accessible toilets within the building. This lack of inclusive facilities is deeply concerning and detracts from an otherwise excellent institution. :prohibited:

On a positive note, I appreciated the museum’s commitment to sustainability, evidenced by the recycled material waiting chairs and the sustainable recycling bins. These eco-conscious touches are commendable. :recycling_symbol:

In Conclusion:

VITM offers a captivating and educational experience for all ages. However, the museum’s accessibility shortcomings, particularly concerning the elevator and restroom facilities, need urgent attention. While the ramps are a good start, true inclusivity requires a more comprehensive approach. I hope the authorities take note and address these issues to ensure that everyone can enjoy this valuable resource. :folded_hands:

This museum was huge and you have done great justice by covering it effectively through the collages - all are superb @MathanVibranarayan :+1:

I have been here several times, and the kids greatly enjoy it.

So I’d suggest going there on a weekday when the exhibits can be enjoyed peacefully.

Wow! this is a great Museum to visit. I have added this to my list of Museums to visit. Whenever, I go Bengaluru next, I will visit this Museum.

All the photos and details are awesome @MathanVibranarayan. Like always, this post of yours is agan a detailed one covering all important aspects of the place.

Yes, it appears to be small but did you check what kind of in-house wheelchair :wheelchair_symbol: they had there? If they have the provision of portable small wheelchair like the one which used to be there to go inside the Aircraft, possibly that work.

If I were in your situation then first of all I would look at the suggestion booklet or suggestion box and drop my accessibility suggestions there and if not then I would look at the administration and if I saw the administration staff then I would give them accessibility suggestions. Anyway nicely narrated thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks :handshake:

Yes, dear @MathanVibranarayan … you are very true that the handicapped has a lot of limitations as of now - we can hope that they will do their best in the coming future.
Also, each of the exhibits have its own unique aspect and excellent for students more…of course, irrespective of age, it is worth to visit.
Also, they make some possible changes from time to time to attract the students again and again.
Your first photo is really fantastic :ok_hand::revolving_hearts:
Very well captured and presented…did you frame it from MAP Terrace?. Highly appreciate :folded_hands:
Sincere regards

Wonderful post on the VITM Science Exhibits. Pictures are beautiful as well, clearly detailing the different sections of Exhibits. I specially loved the fact that you covered accessibility in such details. It’s true we need to be more mindful of the challenges of wheelchair Accessibility and design the accessibility features accordingly.
There’s a similar place located in New Delhi, The National Science Centre which has a lot of exhibits. I shall visit it soon and post it on connect, keeping in mind to review the accessibility features. Thank you for sharing @MathanVibranarayan
