I am staying in Ahmedabad since my birth. On February 26, 2020 (a day celebrated as the birthday of Ahmedabad), I read about Gates of Ahmedabad and decided to visit all gates in one day. Even My father showed interest and we decided to visit by Bike to make sure we don’t need to worry about parking in the congested area of Old Ahmedabad. I didn’t find single route to visit all gates anywhere including Google maps so in my back of mind, I decided that I will create a list as well with this location to make sure others don’t find an issue.
Later that day came and I visited all 14 gates of Ahmedabad along with my father. There were few gates which were no more exist so I had made required notes of each Gates and also collected the history of each gate from local staying around. I was so surprised that the people who were staying nearby were not having so much information but I wrote down everything that they knew and taken amazing snaps/video of those gates and have attached to their locations in Google Maps.
In the evening when I was at Manek Burj (last place of my day), I was still not so happy with the information I had collected. I felt that I am missing many stories behind these gates. Looking at the Sabarmati river along with my father, I saw 2 men who were measuring ManekBurj length and checking walls. I went to them and asked what they were doing. I came to know that they are from the Archaeological Survey of India and were there to do a survey between Riverfront and gates.By seeing the enthusiasm in their eyes. I went ahead and curiously asked on the history of gates and surprisingly they seat with me gave me all the details of gates. How did the British try to capture Ahmedabad? Which gates were strongest? How names were given to gates and many other things.
I wrote all these details in my notes and have published some on Maps and Youtube Videos. As being introvert in nature, I never had the courage to get information from others but this incident changed my life. I started exploring more places, collecting history from people and I become a completely new person after that.
I drove 80+ Kms, 10 Hrs in a completely congested area of Ahmedabad. Completely out of my league :). Special thanks to my father who was holding mobiles and guiding me on a direction using Google Maps.
Helping others with my work will never be stopped and many more to come. Happy to find Google Local Guides & Maps which meets my expectations and motivates daily.
