Visited places lost (bug report)

Hello everyone!

Yesterday, when I received my monthly update, I realized that all the places and reviews I made during February do not appear on their counting. I went to see the monthly update from February and they did not even send me one.

In February, I went to Aruba and Panama, but according to Google Maps, I’ve only been to Argentina and Brazil:

These are the contributions I made in Aruba:

And this is the route from one day in Aruba, which clearly shows I was in this other country:

And the funny thing is that they created the trip: Ezeiza, Noord, and Panama City. But when I click on the places, it shows nothing:

And in the monthly report for March, it shows I just visited one place since January.

I truly do not know where else to post or ask about this, so I put it here. Hope anyone comes up with a solution.

Hi @Lukelhm

The timeline only work when signed into your Google account in Google Maps. Could it be that you by accident used another Google Account while traveling or could you have turned off location history?

Another explanation could be that the spam filter caught your contributions, but that would le not affect your timeline data.

I can confirm from your public profile that you have added 376 reviews and only 354 of them are public.

I do see some photos from Aruba in your public contribution list. Please use Incognito mode to check.

You can use the form called Account Investigation for contributions not visible on Google Maps if you believe that some of your contributions have been wrongfully unpublished. Keep in mind, it takes several weeks for the check to be done, and you will not be notified about the result, so I suggest you check the status of your reviews once a week or so.

Best of luck

Hi @MortenCopenhagen , as far as I know, I did not switch or use another account during that month. I checked about the history deletion, but it is turned off.

I just checked my contributions from Aruba and they are all there, visible.

The thing is that it is like Maps decided not to register anything for the entire month because they did not even send me the monthly update about places visited and more. But somehow, they are telling me “Hey, you just visited these countries, but at the same time you did not”.

Could it be those hidden reviews from places that do not exist anymore?

@Lukelhm

If you have alternate Google accounts you can check if they hold the missing data.

Sometimes when I travel to places with for me very expensive mobile data coverage I use flight mode or remove the sim card. This might influence the location data as the gps is also turned off. Could that explain what you are seeing?

I would not consider the lack of a monthly location email the problem but part of the symptoms.

Why is this important to you? I trust that you are aware that you can manually add locations to your timeline.

Cheers

@Lukelhm

Regarding hidden reviews from Aruba (did you not state that all contributions vere public?) I speculate that missing timeline data might a role in reviews not going public. The opposite: timeline data missing because some reviews got taken down sounds unlikely to me.

@MortenCopenhagen

So I started checking which reviews were hidden and I found they were from places I visited the last past year. Checking the vocabulary and pictures uploaded, all followed the guidelines so I edited, and changed a few words and now some of them appear.

I went again into my timeline and made some “moves” (click on the place and accept it again, kinda like that) and now it is showing a couple of places from this country, the ones I clicked on. I think it is a bug from Maps.

I like to see my stats. I see it as a collection, of how many places I visited, etc. And it was frustrating to see it not taken into account.

@Lukelhm

Maybe there was an outage on the timeline. Let me tag @DeniGu for a check:

Did we overlook something?

Could this be a bug?

Has there been an outage?

@Lukelhm Please let Deni know approximately when the untracked trip was.

Cheers

Thanks @DeniGu for you response.

Last night I checked again and went to my routes and selected the same places. And some of them popped up. Today I did the same, and I changed the minutes I was in each place and many more places showed up on the trip. I think it is definitely a bug as I did not change anything on the setting in the last months.

And @MortenCopenhagen . About the hidden reviews. I had to fill out the form you sent me because reviews and pictures following the criteria are not shown. Some of them appeared after changing a couple of words. Maybe the IA is messing there (in a couple I wrote: “The bad part is …”, so I think that’s why they are not shown).

@MortenCopenhagen and @DeniGu I would like you two to take an eye on this review: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Nb7f7GkbafDFbpgx6 . I uploaded it a year ago but was hidden, I changed the review and remained hidden, so I deleted a couple of pictures and now is on, but when I click on the pic, it jumps to another pic from another user. Is that normal?

It does not sound normal, @Lukelhm

Please verify that the issue is not isolated to your device and your account.

Hi @Lukelhm ,

I checked your review on a laptop and on a mobile device but I couldn’t see photos from another user. Can you please share a screenshot of the issue you’re noticing?

Sorry @DeniGu for the delay. I just checked again and now my photos are visible. Apparently, it was a statue that Maps tagged as inappropriate maybe, so I had to delete a couple and now the review is seen and all the photos shown.
