Views of images and reviews on Google Map

From the beginning days becoming a Local Guide, I have some unresolved questions:

  1. When I post an image, if the image is not filtered by Google, there would be about ten views or a little more. “Whos” view that image immediately, even when I post it in midnight while people are sleeping? If the image is hidden by Google filters, there is still about 5 views, “whos” see it while it is not displayed public?

  2. About reviews, I notice some my reviews became hidden to community (I think they violate some standards) for a quite long time, only I can see them in my profile, but their views increase day by day. So, “whos” viewed them?

In conclusion, I want to know if Google Map views on images and reviews are real, or they are only numbers created by machine.

Thank you for your help

Hi @baoduy_hmd

Regarding your first question about the origin of the initial views of photos. This is a really good question. I don’t have an official answer since Google never explained this as far as I know.

My hunch is that the initial small number of views could be related to the photos getting checked, and indexed. And they are copied to all the photo servers. Also, our own views might count. But our own views of the contribution list is also covered by your local cache. This means if you keep reloading your contribution list the number of views will not increase as expected, as your image is already stored on your device in the cache.

Some photos get promoted to also be shown under the city, district, or country the pin is located in. This can sometimes lead to a lot extra views. This is proabably not included in the first 10 views. But the AI searching for great photos for the city, district, or country might explain one of them.

Re. your second question. Views of hidden reviews.

This is not something I have observed (but the initial photoviews is something I notice almost daily).

Reviews can gain some views prior to getting hidden by spam filter if the hiding was not done immediately. And maybe when the spam filter rechecks your texts this could be counted as a new view. But I really don’t know.

Sorry I could not answer your questions any better.

Cheers
