It is true that Kolkata may not have ancient heritage but the Victoria Memorial which was built in the early twentieth century with the efforts of Lord Curzon and the collaboration of many people is capable of mesmerizing the tourists as it’s a renowned tourists attraction.
Dedicated to the memory of the Queen, its design was made after the death of Queen Victoria. The architects of this wonderful monument were William Emerson and Vincent. The foundation was laid by Prince George Frederick Albert of Wales in about 1906 AD later in 1912 he was the King of the United Kingdom and the construction work was completed in about 1921, which was carried out by Sir Rajen Mukherjee’s and Martin’s company based in Kolkata.
In the construction of this magnificent rectangular building, white marble brought from Makrana Rajasthan was used in a very excellent way.
This building is mainly north facing as the main entrance is located in the north direction. It is a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The use of European elements and Mughal aesthetic elements in its construction makes this building more attractive. Influenced by French art, the statues on the domes symbolize truth, time, art, architecture and the statue on the main dome symbolizes the angel of victory. Whereas the main north porch depicts the motherhood, judgment and knowledge in the form of sculptures. Fluted columns, arches are supporting the upper galleries and super structures. Grand halls, bays, splendid ceilings, colorful glasses, and ornamented with natural colours made this memorial in the form of museum just unique.
It’s a renowned and landmark monument located in Kolkata. Entry is not free. Its gardens tanks plantations are well laid in its surroundings.
