Khajuraho mean Chandela rulers were great patron and devotees of Lord Vishnu and Shiva. Though other sects were regarded as well, Jain temples are the significant in this context. Vamana temple is such a magnificent creation dedicated to the fifth incarnation of Vishnu. It’s located in the Eastern Group of temples.
It was built between 1050 to 1075 AD. Craftsmanship, sculpture and architecture had reached its zenith during the reign of Chandela. The construction of this temple is based on the Nagra Style architectural art. It’s built on a raised platform and facing to the East. Its sanctum is having the standing idol of lord Vishnu in the Vamana form having either side the Chakrapushp. Entrance door frame is having many mythical sculptures organised in seven straps like bindweed, lotus flowers, dancing people, couples, helix woman figure, female attendant with Kalsh and garlands, male attendant, Ganga, Yamuna in tribhanga formate, etc. Lintel centre is having the four armed image of Vishnu and either side the images of Brahma and Mahesh. Ceilings, pillars, balconies are marvelous. It’s having entrance porch, hall, balconied windows, Antarala and sanctum Sanctorum. Its exterior is well proportioned and having Sculptures of graceful beauties, erotic images, niches on the exterior of the sanctum Sanctorum with the incarnationz of Vishnu, and many other motifs. Roof is adorned with the main spire above the sanctum Sanctorum and subsidiary spires same way Shikhara above the Mandapam which is also having subsidiary towers. Balconies are crowned with decorated motifs.
It’s a marvelous treasure of art and architecture. It needs half an hour at least. Nearest attractions are Brahma temple, Javari temple etc. It’s a major attraction among history buffs wanderers soulseekers heritage art and architecture lovers.
