Dear Local Guides Community,
Today, I want to share a different kind of Valentine’s Day celebration that reminds us why we do what we do as Local Guides – connecting people, building communities, and spreading love in all its forms.
My Story:
As an international student from Guinea, West Africa, pursuing my MBA in Rural Management at KIIT School of Rural Management in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, Valentine’s Day 2026 could have been a lonely day, thousands of miles away from family and loved ones.
But instead, I chose to redefine what Valentine’s Day means.
Love is Not Just Romance – It’s Gratitude, Appreciation, and Community
I decided to celebrate with the people who have become my family here in India:
- The staff at the International Relations Office who guide us through every challenge
- My department coordinators at KIIT School of Rural Management who mentor us daily
- Our University Chancellor who creates an inclusive environment for all
- A dedicated staff member with disabilities who inspires us with his resilience and commitment
The Message:
Each person received a flower and a card with a simple message:
“Thank you for being my family away from home. Happy Valentine’s Day!”
Because love transcends romantic relationships. Love is:
- The professor who stays late to help you understand a concept
- The administrative staff who processes your documents with care
- The colleague with disabilities who shows up every day with a smile
- The university leadership that makes you feel valued and safe
Why I’m Sharing This on Local Guides Connect:
As Local Guides, we understand the power of connection. We map not just places, but experiences. We don’t just review locations – we celebrate the people who make those places special.
KIIT University (
Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India) isn’t just an educational institution on Google Maps. It’s a global community where students from over 65 countries find their second family.
The Deeper Meaning:
In our pursuit of building inclusive communities through Google Maps, let’s remember:
- Every review we write helps someone find a place where they belong
- Every photo we share tells a story of human connection
- Every rating we give recognizes someone’s effort to serve others
My colleague with disabilities who received a flower today – he reminded me why accessibility reviews matter. Why noting if a place has ramps, or wide doorways, or accessible restrooms isn’t just data – it’s dignity.
A Challenge to Fellow Local Guides:
This Valentine’s Day, let’s expand our definition of love:
- Review that small family restaurant that welcomed you warmly
- Photograph that accessible entrance that made someone’s day easier
- Rate that hotel where the staff remembered your name
- Highlight that university or workplace that embraces diversity
Final Thought:
Google Maps connects over a billion people to places. But places are just buildings without the people who fill them with warmth, care, and purpose.
To my KIIT family: Thank you for teaching me that home isn’t where you’re from – it’s where you’re valued, supported, and loved.
To my fellow Local Guides: Keep mapping the world, but never forget to map the hearts that make those places worth visiting.
